Using Electronic Devices to Improve Academic Performance of Jhs 2 Pupils in Social Studies.
CHAPTER ONE
Objective of the study
The objectives of the study are;
- To ascertain the relationship between electronic devices and performance of JHS 2 pupil on social studies
- To ascertain whether there is distraction between the pupil with electronic device and those without
- To find out the performance of pupil with electronic device and those without on social studies
CHAPTER TWO
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Electronic Devices
Electronic devices are components for controlling the flow of electrical currents for the purpose of information processing and system control. Prominent examples include transistors and diodes. Electronic devices are usually small and can be grouped together into packages called integrated circuits (Hew 2015). Social network comes together a range of key issues such as: – Social networks can be used to enhance awareness (e.g. capturing population data), understanding (e.g. explaining changes in food prices), and/or forecasting (e.g. predicting human migration patterns). – Mediums that provide effective sources of big data include satellite, mobile phone, social media, internet text, internet search queries, and financial transactions. – The popularity of communication among people on social networks has been significantly increased in recent years (Mayer 2015).
Social Networks used by Higher Education Students:
– General distribution of social networks used by students:
– You Tube
– Netlog
– Flickr
– MySpace
– Blogs – Others
Review of the research into integrating mobile devices with teaching and learning
There are seven studies which reviewed the research into integrating mobile devices with teaching and learning and can be divided into two types according to the devices they focused on: (1) those focused on how laptops are used in schools and (2) those focused on the applications of various types of mobile device in education. Regarding the review of laptop-based programs, Zucker and Light (2009) believed that school programs integrating laptops into schools have a positive impact on student learning. However, they also believed that laptop use did not achieve the goals of increasing higher-level thinking and transformation of classroom teaching methods. Penuel (2006) reviewed 30 studies that examined the usage of laptops with wireless connectivity in one-to-one computer programs. Those studies found that students most often used the laptops to do homework, take notes, and finish assignments. General-purpose software such as word processors, web browsers, and presentation software were relatively common. Bebell and O’Dwyer (2010) examined four different empirical studies of laptop programs in schools.
CHAPTER THREE
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research design
The researcher used descriptive research survey design in building up this project work the choice of this research design was considered appropriate because of its advantages of identifying attributes of a large population from a group of individuals. The design was suitable for the study as the study sought Using electronic devices to improve academic performance of jhs 2 pupils in social studies.
Sources of data collection
Data were collected from two main sources namely:
Primary source:
These are materials of statistical investigation which were collected by the research for a particular purpose. They can be obtained through a survey, observation questionnaire or as experiment; the researcher has adopted the questionnaire method for this study.
Secondary source:
These are data from textbook Journal handset etc. they arise as byproducts of the same other purposes. Example administration, various other unpublished works and write ups were also used.
CHAPTER FOUR
PRESENTATION ANALYSIS INTERPRETATION OF DATA
Introduction
Efforts will be made at this stage to present, analyze and interpret the data collected during the field survey. This presentation will be based on the responses from the completed questionnaires. The result of this exercise will be summarized in tabular forms for easy references and analysis. It will also show answers to questions relating to the research questions for this research study. The researcher employed simple percentage in the analysis.
CHAPTER FIVE
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
5.1 Introduction
It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain Using electronic devices to improve academic performance of jhs 2 pupils in social studies. In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing the challenge of Using electronic devices to improve academic performance of jhs 2 pupils in social studies.
5.2 Summary
This study was on Using electronic devices to improve academic performance of jhs 2 pupils in social studies. Three objectives were raised which included: To ascertain the relationship between electronic devices and performance of JHS 2 pupil on social studies, to ascertain whether there is distraction between the pupil with electronic device and those without and to find out the performance of pupil with electronic device and those without on social studies. In line with these objectives, two research hypotheses were formulated and two null hypotheses were posited. The total population for the study is 200 staff of selected primary schools in Uyo. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. A total of 133 respondents made headmasters, headmistresses, senior staff and junior staff were used for the study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies
5.3 Conclusion
Electronic devices issues are significant because they enlighten positive and negative areas that require address. To identify these significant issues and understanding the positive and negative matters they raise is key to the Electronic devices they offer advantages for student learning and frustrations from learning with electronic devices the most important advantages is the ability to access information quickly and conveniently such as accessing subject contents such a discussion boards, subject readings, and video clips they need to watch for class on their mobile devices
Recommendation
Materials with today’s technology for social studies lesson should be chosen and developed. The technological groundwork of the schools should be improved and schools should be designed in a way to present opportunities for multimedia use. The number of movies, slides, animations, photographs and voice records used for the objectives of the lessons should be increased and choices should be varying. Students should be integrated more into the learning process by enabling them to prepare some multimedia materials (slides, Internet searches, etc.)
