CHAPTER ONE

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to:

  1. Consider factors or means of prevention and treatments of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.
  2. Pre-disposed youths to STDs.
  3. To assist partners or individuals in these localities discuss their sexual and STD history before having sex and to consider getting tested.
  4. To help individuals that are sexually active to understand the symptoms and how they are spread.
  5. To help the general population to understand the symptoms and how to diagnose the diseases.

CHAPTER TWO

LITERATURE REVIEW

Sexually transmitted disease (STD) is a diseases caused by pathogens (e.g. virus, bacteria, parasite, fungus) that is spread from persons to persons. It is debilitating and life threatening. They may be transmitted through the exchange of some blood and other body fluid or by direct contact. The term sexually transmitted disease applied to more than twenty infectious diseases.

At one time these disease were commonly referred to as (VD) venereal diseases. Sexually transmitted diseases are very common and mild medical infections can be cleaned up with simple medical treatment. If left untreated however, serious complication can result.

  1. Blindness
  2. Bone deformities
  3. Heart disease
  4. Infertility
  5. Mental retardation
  6. Death
  7. Cancer

The majority of these complications occur when the disease is not treated properly.

TYPES OF STDS

The following are some of the common STDS presently in the world.

Chlamydia: Chlamydia diseases are caused by microscopic organism that belong to the family of Chlamydia. Two common Chlamydia infections are non gonococcal (not gonorrhea) urethritis (NGU) and non-specific urethritis (NUS), Urethritis means an inflammation of the urethra. Chlamydia is especially dangerous in women it is very often has no symptoms, but if left untreated it can lead to infertility in a woman.; the disease can caused scarring of the fallopian tubes, sterility, infertility, ectopic pregnancy or chronic pelvic pain.

According to the report of the challenges STD prevention in the united state (STD) prevention in the united states HTD (2005) out of the four (4) million new cases reported every year 2.6 million of these are women.

Genital Warts (HPV): These are caused by human papillo-ma-virus (HPV) which comes in several shapes and sizes some are as a pin heads some are flat. It is the single most important risk factors for cervical cancer in women. Genital warts re viral infections, so they can come back after the initial treatment and that is why approximately five millions of people are infected with HIV every year in an advanced and developed country as the United States.

 

CHAPTER THREE

METHODOLOGY

This chapter examines the description of the methodology of the study of the prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted disease in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.

RESEARCH DESIGN

This research work is designed to find out some of the possible preventive measures and treatment of selected sexually transmitted disease in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State, and hence in doing this examined the mode of transmission, symptoms, diagnosis and prognosis of sexually transmitted disease.

POPULATION OF THE STUDY

The population consists of youths, traders, civil servant, and students of secondary and tertiary institutions in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.

CHAPTER FOUR

ANALYSIS OF DATA

This chapter is concerned with the analysis of data collected for this study. The data were obtained from a random sampling of students in two secondary schools and two tertiary institutions, civil servants, traders, from two markets all in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.

The table shows the numbers of students, traders, civil servant and market men and women who responded to the questionnaires administered. The data collected through questionnaires used to test each of the research questions formulated.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

The extent of this research is to examine the way forward in the prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted disease. A case study of Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. Respondents included students from one secondary school, two tertiary institutions, civil servants, and traders who were randomly selected. Five research questions were formulated and tested with sets of questionnaires and the results obtained were analyzed below from the results obtained it shows that:

  1. Faithfulness to only your married partners whose sexually transmitted disease status has been proved by a blood test prevents STD’s.
  2. Abstinence from sex, if you are single prevent sexually transmitted disease.
  3. Anti-biotic help in the treatment of sexually transmitted disease.
  4. Voluntary counselling and sex education of youths can prevent sexually transmitted disease.

CONCLUSION

This project was designed to examine a way forward in the prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State focused attention on areas such as mode of transmission, factors, predisposing youths to STDs, treatment and prevention. Researcher therefore recommends the following area for further study for a comprehensive study, when will sexually transmitted disease become thing of history in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State, can herbs and anti-biotic help in the treatment of STD’s.

RECOMMENDATIONS

On the strength of findings this study the following recommendations were given:

  1. Ministry of education should see to the effective introduction of sex education into the curriculum of schools starting from their primary to tertiary level.
  2. Monogamy should be encouraged being that most respondents that kicked against faithfulness to their spouse came from polygamous family.
  3. It is of great importance to go for STDs test before getting married to any individual.
  4. The use of condoms and other contraceptives should be encouraged for those engaging in sex.
  5. Parents should also educate their children on sex and sexual development/behaviour/
  6. Corporate bodies, non-governmental organization (NGOs) and religious bodies should be involved in the sensitization of people through voluntary counselling free of charge.
  7. Government should provide subsidized drugs for STD’s victims especially the HIV/AIDS patients as a fundamental task and not as a privilege rendered.
  8. Cleanliness should be our watchword and a thing or practice.
