Chapter One

Purpose of the Study

This study aims to examine the use of raw materials inspection and its impact on the quality of production in Nigeria bottling companies. The study is set out specifically to:

  1. To highlight the methods of raw materials inspection and their impact on the quality of production in Nigeria bottling companies.
  2. To identify the function responsible for inspection in Nigeria bottling company.
  3. To identify the extent to which inspection helped the organization in achieving quality production.
  4. To determine how the quality of raw materials affects the production process.

CHAPTER TWO:

Literature Review

Verifying the quality and quantity of incoming raw materials is an important aspect of the purchasing and supply function. The organization has both business and legal right to test and inspect all incoming raw materials. This chapter will review the views and opinions of authors and scholars on the subject matter.

Conceptual Framework of Inspection and Quality

This section will focus on what inspection and quality is.

Baily, et al (2008) discussed that “quality is a word with several meaning and connotations for examples, it can be thought of as the extent to which a product or services meet customers’ satisfaction.” By extension they said that an idea gaining wide spread supports is that quality is whatever the customer say it is the quality gurus.

(Deming, Juran) have been extremely influential and have taught us that quality is an issue related to strategic advantage.

Womack, et al (1996) have advocated the pursuit of perfection, meaning that avoidance of all waste, though they state: Perfection is like infinity. Trying to envision it (and to get there) is actually impossible, but the effort to do so provides inspiration and direction essential to making progress along the path, therefore they defined quality as the whole set of features and characteristics of a product or service that are relevant to meeting requirement (p.132).

Leenders, et al (2006) stressed that “quality in the simplest sense, refers to the ability of the supplier to provide goods and services in conformance with specification”. Thus, it is often said that an item is “no good” or of bad quality” when it fails in use even though the original requisition or specification may be fault. The idea of course is achieved when all inputs acquired pass this use test satisfactory (p.124)

Hassan (2008) stated that quality is refers to all the features and characteristics of a product or service that are relevant to its ability to satisfy a particular need. He also stated that Kotler  and Armstrong (2001) define quality as the ability of a product or services to perform it’s functions which includes overall durability, reliability, precision, case of maintenance and repair and other customer valued attributes. He further stated that (Moffat 1993) sees quality as the total features and characteristics of a product or services that bears on its ability to satisfy a given need. It is the degree to which customer requirement are met. He further explained that the internationally accepted definition of quality is the one offered by BS EN ISO 190 “quality is the degree to which a set of inherent characteristic fulfils requirement” (202 and 203).

Hassan (2008) explained that “verifying the quality and quantity of incoming materials is an important aspect of the purchasing and supply option”, that the buying organization has both business and legal right to test and inspect all incoming raw materials.  He said soon as the raw material arrives, the receiving officers have one of the three options. The first option is to accept the whole lot without inspecting the raw materials; second option is to inspect all items in the lot. Thirdly is to choose an appropriate sample from the lot to represent the whole lot. He further stated that “unless in exceptional situations the first option is actually not a good one because inspection ensures that only raw materials that met specified standards are accepted that inspection is a major quality control tool” (p. 223 and 224).

 

Chapter Three:

Research Methodology

Introduction

This chapter describes methods and procedures used in conducting this research work, the procedure will be done as follows; area of study, research design,  population of the study, sample and sampling procedure, instrument for data collection, administration of the instrument and techniques for analyzing data.

Area of the Study

The research study will be conducted in the quality control related units of the organization NBC Kaduna. The study selections will includes:

  1. Purchasing department, which is responsible for sourcing and acquisition of raw materials into the needs of organization to support their operational activities for production process.
  2. Quality control department: this unit is responsible for the drawing of the specification needs of the organization.
  • Production department: this unit is responsible for the transformation of raw material purchase into the organization to finished goods.
  1. Stock control department: this function sees to the management of raw material acquisition and control in the organization.

The justification for choosing these units of the organization as the area of the study is because they are responsible for the specification drawing, control of raw materials held by the organization and those units can be investigated to examine the impact of inspection of raw materials as a tool to enhancing quality and to know the difficulties encounter in inspection procedure of the organization in order to prefer solution to these difficulties.

Research Design

The study is assessing raw material inspection and it impacts on quality of production in Nigeria Bottling Company, Kaduna. The research design that will be adopted for the purpose of this study work is survey research design. It is considered suitable for this study because survey design can be used in a wider sense to effectively study the technique which will also enable the researcher to make use of many instruments to select data for analyzing and presentation.

Population of the Study

This unit of the research study will access the total number of people, the researcher intending to carryout research on the estimate population for the survey will be 300 staff and these will be drawn from inventory control, purchasing, quality control and production unit of the organization at Nigeria bottling company Kaduna Plant.
