Chapter One

AIM AND OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The project aims to discuss the various and specific uses of computers and provide an avenue for the study of the acquisition of technical skills and knowledge in the use of computers in civil engineering, and also to be able to know how it is being used to solving the problem in the preparation of civil engineering works.

LITERATURE REVIEW

HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF COMPUTER

The computer has been widely applied and developed as the advantages of a speed and high accuracy. The history of computer could be traced back to the effort of man to count large numbers. This process of counting of large numbers generated various system of numeration like Babylon system of numeration, Greek system of numeration roman system of numeration and Indian system of numeration has been accepted universally. It is the basis of modern decimal system of numeration (0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9). It took over generations for early man to build mechanical device for counting large numbers. The first calculating device called ABACUS was developed by the Egyptian and Chinese people. The word ABACUS means calculating board. It consists of sticks in horizontal positions on which were inserted sets of pebbles. A modern form of ABACUS is given. It has a number of horizontal bars represent units, tens, hundreds etc.

According to English mathematician JOHN NAPIER built a mechanical device for the purpose of multiplication in 1617 AD. The device was known as Napier’s bones.

According to English mathematician Edmund Gunter developed the slide rule. This machine could perform operation like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. And it was widely used in Europe in 16th century.

According to Blasé Pascal he developed a machine at the age of 19 that could add and subtract. The machine consisted of wheels gears and cylinders. The German Philosopher and mathematician Gottfried Leibniz bult around 1673 a mechanical device that could both multiply and divide.

  1. Analog computer
  2. Digital computer
  3. Hybrid computer

Analog computer: It operates by setting up physical situation that are analogous to mathematical situation. An analog computer operates on data in the form of continuously variable physical quantities such as pressure, temperature, revolution, speed of sound. An analog computer is essentially on measuring device. They are used as controlling device in oil refineries, paper mills, steel mills, and military weapons system. They measure and compare quantities in one generation. It has no storage, it uses dials or cathode ray tubes to provide answer to solved problems.

Digital computer: It operate on representation of real numbers, Digital computer have memory and could solve problem by counting,.

 

CHAPTER THREE

INSTALLATION OF COMPUTER

Installation (or setup) of a program (including drivers, plugging, etc.) is the act of putting the program onto a computer system so that it can be executed. Because the requisites process varies for each programs (including operating system) come with a general-purpose or dedicated installation program called an installer.

Installer is a specialized program which automatics most of the work required for their installation.

TYPES OF INSTALLATION

SILENT INSTALLATION

Installation that does not display message or windows during its progress. “Silent installation” is not the same as “unattended installation” though it is often improperly termed as ‘such.

CONCLUSION

The computer can play a useful and important role in the teaching and learning of civil engineering concepts and application depending on the type of software used, the professor can design the course such that the computer can be used advantageously to increase the understanding of engineering concepts and develop sound judgment in students. Since the development of faster and more affordable computers will be the trend, it is necessary that civil engineering schools should increase the awareness in students on the significant role computers play in education and in the industry.

RECOMMENDATION

Computers are recommended for all civil engineering students to speed up (improve) operating in many activities and also every grown up student in every country especially in Nigeria. Lastly, it is recommended for the improve administrative efficiency.
