REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Conceptual framework

Crisis

Wolf-Dieter Eberwein wrote: “The formation of concepts is an essential basis of the theoretical construction; the accuracy of terms is essential for the designation of phenomena that we want to describe and explain.” A crisis is critical, decisive and surprising moment to the state and society linked to the conflict and contradiction in the society. Due to the large number and the diversity of ‘crisis’ and its escalating severity , the importance of the role played by the media in the accompanying crises is highlighted, both in terms of its role in its creation or contribution to its aggravation or resolution. Visions about the importance and limits of the role played by these methods and mechanisms vary and needed, especially in solving problems as avoiding risk of crisis since it is not feasible to leave things for the experience, error or improvisation, subsequently, planning the basic pillars of the media process

Concept of Media

Media is an idea-based human activity, sharing and convincing by transmitting information, facts, news , numbers and statistics, a synonym for the word ‘media’ can be associated to ‘mass communication’ minding the differencebetween the media in which the objective is supposing neutrality and the publicity that follows a style of temptation, excitement and stir emotions – The media assumed to keep up with the existing culture and civilization and raising the level of public opinion environmentally, culturally and build knowledge as well as embodiment of complications. Given the importance of the media for being considered a fourth kind of revolution because it is linked to scientific and technological developments contributing to the expansion of horizons and building emotions, appealing to the public, with a comparison between the impact of television, school, university with both dimensions, and expanding areas of life and economic dimensions because any media flow will make the people more enabled to act. The media, traditional and new in concept, both represent an active pivotal in shaping today’s world, it can play a role of awareness and educationally focused awareness of crises through news, commentary and interpretation, or the tendency to cover them with a dramatic way dominated by the flatness and the absence of awareness of individuals.

Radio

Radio is an audio device of passing messages to a large audience. Radio involves the process by which messages are sent through electrical waves. In other words, the sound could be sent and received through these waves, (Sambe, 2008:75). According to Idebi (2008:1) the word Radio is defined as the process of sending and receiving messages through the air, using electromagnetic waves. It is also about the activity of broadcasting programmes for people to listen to the programmes being broadcast. According to Uyo (1987) Radio as a word has its origin in the Latin H[SUHVVLRQ ³5DGLXV¶ ZKLFK PHDQV UDGLXV UD\V_x000F_ WKLV LPSOLHV WKDW UDGLR LV DQ instrument through which signals are beamed out via electromagnetic process land distributed via a transmitter to a scattered audience who receive it via an antenna on a receiving set. Sambe, (2008) adds that Radio involves the process by which messages are sent through electrical waves. Radio can also be seen as a medium used for sending and receiving messages through the air using electronic waves. It is also about the activity of broadcasting programmes for people to listen to the programmes being broadcasted (Idebi, 2008:1). It can also be defined as the broadcasting of programmes for the public to listen to. It is the system of sending sound over a distance by transmitting electrical signals (BBC English Dictionary, 1992:946).

Chapter Three

  Research methodology

Research Design

The research design adopted in this research work is the survey research design which involves the usage of self-designed questionnaire in the collection of data. Under the survey research design, primary data of this study will be collected from selected from residents in Ehwrerko and Afiere in Ugheli North Local Government Area in order to determine the role of Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) Radio in managing Ehwrereko and Afiesere crisis in Ughelli North LGA Area, Delta State. The design was chosen because it enables the researcher to collect data without manipulation of any variables of interest in the study. The design also provides opportunity for equal chance of participation in the study for respondents.

Population of Study

The population of study is the census of all items or a subject that possess the characteristics or that have the knowledge of the phenomenon that is being studied (Asiaka, 1991). It also means the aggregate people from which the sample is to be drawn.

Population is sometimes referred to as the universe. The population of this research study will be Seventy-five (75) residents of residents in Ehwrerko and Afiere in Ugheli North Local Government Area of Ughelli North LGA Area, Delta State.

 CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter is about the analysis and presentation of data collected from the field through questionnaire. The analysis of the data with particular question immediately followed by the presentation of findings.

As mentioned in chapter three, 63 questionnaires were administered and 50 were retrieved and necessary analysis was carried out on them and presented as follows:

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Introduction

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain the role of Delta Broadcasting Service ( DBS) Radio in managing Ehwrereko and Afiesere crisis in Ughelli North LGA Area, Delta State. In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing the challenges of the role of Delta Broadcasting Service ( DBS) Radio in managing Ehwrereko and Afiesere crisis

Summary

Three objectives were raised which included: To examine causes of communal crisis in Ehwrereko and Afiere, to examine the role of Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) Radio in managing Ehwrereko and Afiesere crisis in Ughelli North LGA Area and to ascertain how has Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) Radio enhanced relationship between the people of the Communities. The total population for the study is 75 selected residents in Ekwrereko and Afiesere. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies

Conclusion

Based on the study findings, radio (Delta broadcasting service) is the most pervasive medium and communication tool for deescalating conflict in Ughelli local government area of Delta state. The findings also suggest a number of other things. First, that radio remains a critical avenue through which communities particularly in remote in Ehwereko and Afiere communities send and receive information. This is important because, for practical purposes, the issue of access to these vital sources of information is necessary for active citizenship participation in conflict management. In view of the findings of this research, it can be concluded that radio contributes to conflict resolution. It is evident that radio is a suitable media for disseminating messages of peace in conflict torn areas not only duringthe actual conflicts but also during the post conflict period. Ideally, with its professional objectives of accuracy, impartiality and public responsibility, media should be a contributor to peace building.

Recommendation

Media organizations should come up with broadcasting policies that give more prominence to issues of conflict resolution and peace building especially with regard to the frequency of peace and conflict resolution programming. In addition, the media should design programs meant for conflict resolution in such a manner as to allow audience participation since issues of conflict touch on all people. ii. All stake holders including policy holders in the media environment need to understand that the conflict between Ehwererko and Afiere communities is a unique one and requires unique measures. This includes improved ICT in the region, increased support for media peace efforts and involvement of external mediators.
