Chapter One

Objective of the study

The objectives of the study on “The Role of Consumer Health Education in Healthy Lifestyle Modifications among Staffs of Delta State College of Education, Mosogar” are as follows:

  1. To assess the current level of awareness among staff members at Delta State College of Education, Mosogar, regarding the importance of healthy lifestyle modifications.
  2. To identify and analyze the existing gaps in consumer health education within the college community.
  3. To investigate the barriers and challenges that hinder staff members from adopting and maintaining healthy lifestyle modifications.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Consumer health education

Consumer health education is a critical concept within the field of public health and healthcare. It refers to the process of imparting knowledge and skills to individuals, empowering them to make informed decisions about their health and healthcare. This education is aimed at promoting better health outcomes, preventing diseases, and reducing healthcare costs. Several key aspects and principles characterize the concept of consumer health education, which draws from various disciplines including health education, psychology, and sociology. Consumer health education aims to empower individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to take charge of their own health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “health education enables people to increase control over their health” (WHO, 2021). This empowerment helps individuals make healthier choices and take preventive measures.

Health literacy is a fundamental aspect of consumer health education. It involves the ability to understand and use health information effectively. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services states that health literacy is essential for “making appropriate health decisions” (HHS, 2021). Consumer health education strives to enhance health literacy by providing understandable and accessible health information.

A primary goal of consumer health education is to prevent diseases and promote overall well-being. It equips individuals with the knowledge of risk factors, preventive measures, and healthy behaviors. For instance, the American Public Health Association (APHA) emphasizes that health education helps in “promoting healthy behaviors and preventing health problems” (APHA, 2021).

Effective consumer health education involves tailoring information to the specific needs and preferences of individuals or communities. This concept is supported by research in health communication, such as the study by Kreuter et al. (2000) on the importance of tailoring messages for behavior change.

Recognizing and respecting cultural diversity is a fundamental principle in consumer health education. Cultural competence in healthcare education helps ensure that health information is relevant and acceptable to diverse populations (Betancourt et al., 2003).

Consumer health education also plays a crucial role in facilitating informed healthcare decision-making. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) emphasizes the importance of educating consumers to make informed choices about their healthcare (AHRQ, 2021).

In the modern age, digital health literacy is becoming increasingly important. Consumer health education now includes teaching individuals how to critically evaluate online health information and use digital tools for managing their health (Norman & Skinner, 2006).

 

CHAPTER THREE

  RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The research design adopted in this research work is the survey research design which involves the usage of self-designed questionnaire in the collection of data. Under the survey research design, primary data of this study will be collected from selected staff of Delta state college of education, Mosogar in order to determine the role of consumer health education in healthy lifestyle modifications among staffs of Delta State College of Education. The design was chosen because it enables the researcher to collect data without manipulation of any variables of interest in the study. The design also provides opportunity for equal chance of participation in the study for respondents.

Population of Study

The population of study is the census of all items or a subject that possess the characteristics or that have the knowledge of the phenomenon that is being studied (Asiaka, 1991). It also means the aggregate people from which the sample is to be drawn.

Population is sometimes referred to as the universe. The population of this research study will be Seventy-five (75) selected staff in Delta State college of Education, Mosogar

 CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter is about the analysis and presentation of data collected from the field through questionnaire. The analysis of the data with particular question immediately followed by the presentation of findings.

As mentioned in chapter three, 63 questionnaires were administered and 50 were retrieved and necessary analysis was carried out on them and presented as follows:

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

 Introduction  

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain the role of consumer health education in healthy lifestyle modifications among staffs of Delta State College of Education, Mosogar. In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing the role of consumer health education in healthy lifestyle modifications among staffs of Delta State College of Education, Mosogar.

 Summary                 

This study was on the role of consumer health education in healthy lifestyle modifications among staffs of Delta State College of Education, Mosogar. Three objectives were raised which included: To assess the current level of awareness among staff members at Delta State College of Education, Mosogar, regarding the importance of healthy lifestyle modifications, to identify and analyze the existing gaps in consumer health education within the college community and to investigate the barriers and challenges that hinder staff members from adopting and maintaining healthy lifestyle modification. The total population for the study is 75 selected staff in Delta State College of Education, Mosogar. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study on “The Role of Consumer Health Education in Healthy Lifestyle Modifications Among Staffs of Delta State College of Education, Mosogar” underscores the significance of consumer health education as a powerful tool in promoting and sustaining healthy lifestyle modifications among staff members within the academic community. Our research has revealed several key findings and implications:

Firstly, it is evident that staff members, like individuals in any other setting, encounter a variety of barriers and challenges when attempting to adopt and maintain healthy lifestyle modifications. These obstacles range from time constraints and workplace stress to environmental factors and personal commitments. Recognizing and addressing these challenges is essential for the effective implementation of health education programs.

Secondly, consumer health education plays a pivotal role in raising awareness, enhancing health literacy, and equipping staff members with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed choices about their health and well-being. By providing access to accurate and reliable health information, institutions like Delta State College of Education, Mosogar, can empower their staff to take proactive steps toward healthier lifestyles.

Furthermore, this study underscores the importance of creating a supportive and conducive environment within the workplace. A workplace culture that prioritizes health and well-being, coupled with wellness programs and resources, can significantly contribute to the success of healthy lifestyle modifications among staff members.

In light of these findings, it is recommended that Delta State College of Education, Mosogar, consider implementing a comprehensive and tailored consumer health education program. Such a program should address the specific needs and challenges faced by staff members, offer resources for healthier living, and promote a workplace culture that values the well-being of its employees.

Overall, the findings of this study emphasize the critical role of consumer health education in promoting healthy lifestyle modifications among staff members. By investing in health education initiatives and fostering a supportive workplace environment, educational institutions can contribute not only to the physical health but also to the overall well-being and productivity of their staff. In doing so, they can create a culture of health that benefits both the individuals within the institution and the institution itself.

Recommendation

Based on the findings of the study on “The Role of Consumer Health Education in Healthy Lifestyle Modifications Among Staffs of Delta State College of Education, Mosogar,” the following recommendations are put forth to enhance the promotion of healthy lifestyles among staff members:

  1. Develop Tailored Health Education Programs: Delta State College of Education, Mosogar, should design and implement comprehensive health education programs specifically tailored to the needs and challenges faced by its staff members. These programs should encompass various aspects of health, including nutrition, physical activity, stress management, and preventive healthcare.
  2. Promote Health Literacy: The institution should prioritize initiatives aimed at improving health literacy among staff. This includes offering workshops, seminars, and access to reliable health information resources, enabling staff members to make informed decisions about their health.
  3. Create a Supportive Workplace Culture: Fostering a workplace culture that values and supports the well-being of staff is crucial. Encourage supervisors and leadership to lead by example and actively participate in wellness initiatives. Recognize and celebrate healthy achievements among staff.
  4. Provide Access to Resources: Ensure that staff members have easy access to resources that facilitate healthy lifestyle modifications. This may involve offering fitness facilities, healthy food options on campus, and access to mental health resources.
  5. Incorporate Wellness into Policies: Integrate wellness into organizational policies and practices. This includes incorporating wellness goals and initiatives into strategic planning and employee evaluations.
