The Level of the Knowledge and Source of Information on Sexual Transmitted Infection (STIS) Among Junior Secondary School

CHAPTER ONE

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

To find out if factors like source of information and levels of knowledge on STDs among secondary school youth in an urban setting so as to equip the relevant organization and institution with evidence based information when addressing STIs among youth in schools in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State. The specific objectives of the study are;

  1. To establish the relationship between parent awareness and level of knowledge on sexually transmitted infection.
  2. To establish the relationship between the quality of information parent pass over to their children.
  3. To assess the knowledge of STDs and attitude towards sexual behavior and STDs among secondary school students.

CHAPTER TWO

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

INTRODUCTION

This chapter reviews the literature on the level of the knowledge and source of information on sexual transmitted infection among junior secondary school. It discusses issues arising from the topic of discuss as viewed from different perspectives, with a view of giving a theoretical and empirical foundation to the study.

LITERATURE

The adolescent period is a crucial stage in the life of a child where personality is formed and a child’s thoughts becomes abstract. It is this stage that serves as a pointer to what a child becomes in future. According to Mensch, Bruce &Green (1998), what happens to an adolescent whether good or bad shapes how girls and boys live out their lives as women and men. Many have become teenage parents at a tender age in life and as such limiting their potentials and what could have become of them in the future. Incidentally, many parents have shifted the role of educating their adolescents to the school and other agents of socialization like peer groups and this has exposed them to risky sexual behaviours with grave consequences on their well-being such as sexually transmitted diseases. According to Olubayo-Fatiregun (2012), parents are shy to educate their adolescents on sex and sexual behaviours because of the fear that discussing sexual issues with their children might stimulate their sexual interest to practicing what they have learnt. This has resulted to them shifting the role to other agents such as the school and peer group. Richard (2001) asserted that some parents see sex education to their children as immoral due to religious beliefs that it might encourage pre-marital sex. Studies have also shown that many adolescents initiate sexual intercourse at an early age in life and engage in high risk sexual behaviours such as unprotected sex and multiple sexual partners which expose them to sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancy and illegal abortion among others (UNAIDS 2006). This is similar to CDC (2012) report on a study carried out among U.S. high school students where 46.8% of those sampled have had sexual intercourse, 34.0% had had sexual intercourse during the previous 3 months, and, of these 40.9% did not use condom the last time they had sex while 15.0% had had sex with four or more people during their life time.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research design

The researcher used descriptive research survey design in building up this project work the choice of this research design was considered appropriate because of its advantages of identifying attributes of a large population from a group of individuals. The design was suitable for the study as the study sought to a critical analysis of the level of the knowledge and sources of information on sexual transmitted infection (STI) among junior secondary school.

Sources of data collection

Data were collected from two main sources namely:

(i)Primary source and

(ii)Secondary source

Primary source:

These are materials of statistical investigation which were collected by the research for a particular purpose. They can be obtained through a survey, observation questionnaire or as experiment; the researcher has adopted the questionnaire method for this study.

Secondary source:

These are data from textbook Journal handset etc. they arise as byproducts of the same other purposes. Example administration, various other unpublished works and write ups were also used.

Population of the study

Population of a study is a group of persons or aggregate items, things the researcher is interested in getting information a critical analysis of the level of the knowledge and source of information on sexual transmitted infection among junior secondary school. 150 students and 50 teachers of secondary school students in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State were selected randomly by the researcher as the population of the study.

CHAPTER FOUR

PRESENTATION ANALYSIS INTERPRETATION OF DATA

Introduction

Efforts will be made at this stage to present, analyze and interpret the data collected during the field survey.  This presentation will be based on the responses from the completed questionnaires. The result of this exercise will be summarized in tabular forms for easy references and analysis. It will also show answers to questions relating to the research questions for this research study. The researcher employed simple percentage in the analysis.

DATA ANALYSIS

The data collected from the respondents were analyzed in tabular form with simple percentage for easy understanding.

A total of 133(one hundred and thirty three) questionnaires were distributed and 133 questionnaires were returned.

Question 1

Gender distribution of the respondents.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Introduction

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain a critical analysis of the level of the knowledge and sources of information on sexual transmitted infection among junior secondary school.

In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations are made, which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefit in addressing the challenges of transmitted infections and the knowledge level of junior secondary school students.

Summary

This study aimed at having a critical analysis of the level of the knowledge and source of information on sexual transmitted infection among junior secondary school. Three objectives were raised. These objectives include: To establish the relationship between parent awareness and level of knowledge on sexually transmitted infection, to establish the relationship between the quality of information parent pass over to their children, to assess the knowledge of STDs and attitude towards sexual behavior and STDs among secondary school students.

Conclusion

Based on the above findings pertaining to the objectives of the study the following conclusions are drawn.

There is high level of knowledge among the students on STIs but more needs to be done in creating awareness among junior secondary school students. The sources of knowledge were limited to Seminars organized in the school and jingles on the radio and television.

Recommendation

Health workers should create awareness in secondary schools on these STDs to help the students avoid them. It is also recommended that seminars and workshops should be organized, awareness through pamphlets and leaflets to
