CHAPTER ONE

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of family size and family birth order ion students’ academic performance in some selected secondary schools. It is designed to compare the level of academic performance of students from either large or low family size background. The study will give an insight on how and why some students perform better than others.

CHAPTER TWO

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

In Nigeria little work has been done as regard the area of family factors that influence the learning efficiency or academic performance of students in school in other part of the world, especially in developed countries a lot of work has been done in this area by different researchers as all societies tend to be similar in terms of composition, review of this related literature go a long way in enhancing this work. In this chapter we shall be looking out what family is all about, how family size can influence the academic performance of a student and other factors that can also influence the academic performance of a student and other factors that can influence the academic performance of students in secondary schools.

THE FAMILY

The family is one of the social institution that influence the education of the child, in this chapter therefore, emphasis will be on the family structure, types, as well as role played by the family in education of the learner. Thereafter we will look at how family size can influence the academic performance of students and how other factors can also influence the academic performance of students in secondary schools.

Family therefore can be a bio-social group that is, the family comprises of the biological aspect and social group the family as a primary group of the society is concerned with face to face relationship.

TYPES OF FAMILIES

There are two main types of family

  • Nuclear family
  • Extended family

Nuclear family: this family consists of the father, the mother and children. It is also known as the elementary family. This kind of family can gradually becomes smaller in size with increase in the knowledge and practice of family planning.

Extended family: the extended family consists of two or more nuclear families. It includes a span of two or three generations within the total house hold, it is a situation whereby a man conjugal family to form one extended or enlarge family.

THE FAMILY AND EDUCATION

The family remains an institution which provide for the children’s initial education. The family is the originator of personality and intellectual skills of the child. The homes plays an important role during the school years. The social and emotional atmosphere established by parents remain very important in the homes. Each home has a peculiarity that leaves a unique impression on the child in this section however emphasis will be on the influence of family size on the academic performance of students.

 

CHAPTER THREE

METHODOLOGY

This chapter describes the design of the study and the method of data analysis for the topic. The influence of family size on the academic performance of students in some selected secondary school in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo-State.

Four secondary schools were randomly selected or chosen to gather information regarding the topic stated above, the schools are follows

  1. Ihogbe College, located at I.C.E Road off Wire Road Benin –City
  2. Akenzua Secondary School, a neighbouring school to Ihogbe college, at I.C.E Road off Wire Road Benin –City
  3. Emotan College located at Wire Road Benin –City
  4. Idia College, located at Iyaro

RESEARCH DESIGN

The research design used in this chapter is the simple survey, to get the full data of the four secondary schools selected in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo-State. This method was used because it helps in the easy identification and collection of data relating to the topic: The influence of family size on the academic performance of students.

CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION

This chapter entails the analysis of data collected from respondents/students in the four selected secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo- State. The researcher distributed hundred (100) questionnaires to see their opinion on the influence of family size on the academic performance of students and then collected it from the respondent and duly completed.

From the table above, it shows that sixty (60) respondents representing sixty (60) percentage % were male while forty (40) respondents representing forty (40) percent % were female.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

This study was structured to find out the influence of family size on the academic performance of students.

From the findings in chapter four it was discovered that the size of a family goes a long way in influence the academic performance of students based on the responses of the respondents to the questionnaire issued to them, it was observed that students irrespective of their academic performance they all belong to a family, irrespective of their size; that is why family plays a vital role generally in the life of children

As regard the influence of family size on the academic performance of students with reference to the result of the research, parents are to take the necessary precautions so as to incur good educational background for their children. It was discovered that the success of a student’s both in academic and other aspect in life depend on their parental background, family background and family size base on the finding parents are to take the necessary precautions so as to inculcate in their children good educational background/foundation. They are to take their children’s education as their number one priority in life, not allowing either family size or home to influence the academic of the children.

CONCLUSION

This research work was designed to find out the influence of family size on the academic performance of students

It has been observed from the research that family is a very paramount place where everyone belongs and cannot do without it. But the parents of the family irrespective of the size should ensure the safety of the children’s education and ensure there is peace and harmony midst parents and children to enable them do well in their academy.

RECOMMENDATION

Knowing the usefulness and the importance of family and the influence it has no the life of students

  • The parents should ensure the family is well planned and established so as to equip their children with the basic knowledge that is needed
  • There should be that cordial relationship amidst mother and father with their children so as to combine effort in providing the basic need of the children as students
  • Parents should try as much as possible they stay clear from polygamous in order to avoid domestic war or conflict among children at home. Parents are also to try pay more attention to their children that are students and ensure they give or pay full attention to their academic work.
