CHAPTER TWO
LITERATURE REVIEW
The study is an attitude survey. The extent to which mass media content is perceived as a portray of the real world by an audience is a long standing question of theoretical and social important. Effect of the mass media on attitude, knowledge and beahviour are generally found to be more immediate and direct, when the audience regards the content a either a report about actual circumstances or a highly accurate portray of life and the immediate environment (Igbndion 1984 pg 78)
Also effects of the media exposure tend to be greater, when the content is perceived by the viewers as containing realistic and appropriate models or standards of behaviour.
Defleux and Melvin, in theories of mass communication propounded different theories through which the process of mass communication are effected. They discussed at length, the role of change in psychological functioning of the individual to attain response desirable to the communicators.
Dr Kelinde Adinmagowa, a lecturer in psychology, university of Calabar, reiterated the pint made by Mcluham, in his book he advanced the revolutionary thesis that “the media is the message His idea is that each medium of communication produces social and psychological effects on its, that are quite independent f the content being shown or transmitted.
Lugard Omoymi. In his postulation aid that “ the mind is influence but what happens around, with what the eye sees, and with what the ear hears. When the eyes see too many evil, corruption and things worth not and the ears hear only about evil things the mind gets poisoned and put to Jeopardy
In Meeds (1976) symbolic interaction theory, the self is seen as taking the role of the “ generalized order according order according to the author of this theory. people develop their self concepts though interaction in the context of the social system of which both they and the relevant are apart. Among the perception that are taken from other goals and behaviour that deviate from these norms. These perceptions may be termed “ social ideals” maintenance and functioning of the social orders are internalized by the individual and mass media content is assumed to be a representative of these social ideals.
Data from several studies are consistent is a patterned characteristics of certain social group in specific social structures.
For instance, Greenberg and Dominic (1974 found that disadvantage minority adolescents living in deprived neighborhoods perceived television as realistic more then the middle class adolescents living (in middle class adolescents) in more affluent areas. In many respects, television appears to provide disadvantaged young stars with a “school of life” for their behvaiuor. other than that provided by the immediate environment in which they live.
Tchenor, Nnaemeka, Pliev and Donolum (1975), in their research whether difference in perception of television as reflecting values and normative standards are greater between that communities said that there are three main aspects of media perception. The first is “realism or the degree to which symbols and messages in television content are regarded by viewers as real portrayals of circumstances. The second is the see or the extent to which content or regarded as providing standards and goals appropriate for the viewer. The third is the other set others are perceived as regarding those standard and the goals appropriate.
CHAPTER THREE
RESEARCH METHOD
The data gathering techniques in the study was the survey research method. The data measuring instrument used was the questionnaire, the survey research was used because it was the most appropriate when there is interest in the genralizability if results, since I carried out this research in real life situation
RESEARCH DESIGN
The research design was based on random sampling to ensure that each member of my population or universe has an equally chance of being selected. The randomly pickled sampling is a representative of Nigeria youth.
POPULATION AND SAMPLING
With the research question in mind the impact of foreign films on the behaviour pattern of youths ( a case study of post-secondary school) the population comprises under graduates from the UNIZIK Awka student population and that of some post secondary school was representative, stratification by sex was used.
The two attributes of male ad female were treated equally, male 50 and female 50. The ages of my respondents ranged between 16-35
MEASURING INSTRUMENT
My questionnaire was used as measuring instrument with some of the questions structured and some close ended the questionnaire items were constructed in a simple format one if the most formats used in attitude studies.
CHAPTER FOUR
DATA ANALYSES AND PRESENTATION
Having in mind the topic at hand the impact of foreign films on the behavioural patterns of youths (a case study of post secondary school and higher learning institutions) the population of this study comprised of under graduates fro Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka and post secondary school at Awka a well.
The sample of my population was stratified by sex both male and female with a population o f100 students equal chance are given by both male and female
Male 50
Female= 50
Having used two schools for this study my population was divided into 50 students from Nnamdi Azikwe University and post secondary school 50, in each of these institutions, 25 students out of the 50 student are male, while 25 of the 50 female.
The ages bracket of my respondents from both school ranges from 16-35 the chi-square, one variable analysis was used to test the here hypothesis presented in chapter I and the significant level set for accepting or rejecting the research hypothesis was responsible as pr each question in the questionnaire.
After coding and analyzing my data with chi-square one variables statistical procedure include the following results were obtained.
CHAPTER FIVE
SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATION
SUMMARY
This study set out to explore the impact of foreign films on the behavioural patterns of youths. Regard to this, I have highlighted the impact of foreign films on our youths using post –secondary institution (UNIZIK and GSSA) as a case study. In the beginning the study had three assumptions that foreign films influence the behavaior of youths also that foreign films can have positive impact on youths. Another assumption is that foreign films are alien to our youths.
I brought into limelight the adverse effect of foreign films on the behavioural patterns of youths. In fact, from my findings I can confidently say that these foreign films contribute a great extent to the unbecoming and a wanted life style of the youth in general and not just to those in Nnamdi Azikwe and Girls secondary schools Awka (as used in my study) but t al youths.
I also found out that the youths are full high desire for foreign films nowadays , hence increasing the rate of immoral beahviour in them as they tend to laminate the way and dressing of the actors/actresses they fancy. This is more so particularly among post-secondary student, where learning is at peak It is natural that positive things are leant faster that negative ones. These youths, the fore limited successfully the life’s of those, vagabonds in the films.
Finally, youths who admires and regularly viewers of foreign films are background academically this is because they spent most of their time, going to video clubs, to borrow films that they would watched later in the day instead of them to glanced through their past note book, they slept off.
These youths degenerate into brutes especially when dealing with their age or school mates (as we see on our to days campuses different kinds of violent attacks by our students who called themselves cult guy, they exhibit hostility and declare themselves “rivals and enemies to other s. and want to command force respect from oath ever their elderly one in the school or their lecture because they feel they are equip with axe and knife which is dangerous, so far that people will respect their personality even Girls be friend them for security purpose etc
Moreover since the youths are the leaders of tomorrow we have, there is need for all hands to be on desk in combating this evil how for a stitch in time saves nine.
As a greed by the majority of my respondents (in my research work) that there is no better way of solving this problems then, for government and parents to strictly prohibit their children from watching foreign films that Is not educative censor the kind of films should imported in our country or show on television.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FURTHER STUDY
Having gone through the pages of my work up to this extend, it can be discerned that the major impact of foreign films on the behavioural patterns of youths, is nothing but wanton/undesirable behaviour. For that, I recommend that the government should strictly censor/regulate the excessive importation of foreign films. Besides the government should also drastically regulate the law, authorizing the establishment of video clubs/house. This is because it is in these video clubs that a good majority of our youths, constantly have access to foreign films. For that, the issues of censorship will along way, in helping the situation
Also I recommend that television station in the country, should also regulate the rate at which foreign films are show on televisions.
Further, parent/guardian. Hs a major roles to play because their responsibility are more in bringing up their children as we all know that family is a primary agent of socialization parent. guardian should seriously monitor their children behaviour, the types of films they watch and the kind of friends he/she keep or more with, this is because it is evident that some youths who watch violent films or keep bad finds are likely to exhibit aggressive tendencies.
Nevertheless, the government should fill in the vacuum, after censoring of the said films. This is by urgently going into massive production of educative films, promote our own native culture and entertaining films, so as to enlighten and encourage youths towards national. Development in these ways the government should helps to sustain our cultural norms among other things.
Moreover, I believe that if the above recommendations/ solutions are religiously followed, the worrisome attitude four great leader of tomorrow will son be a thing of past.
