CHAPTER ONE

Objective of the study

The main objective of the study is to investigate the impact of Covid-19 on the academic performance of primary pupils in Edo state. Specific objectives are;

  1. To find out the effect of COVID19 on education in Nigeria
  2. To find out the challenges by primary schools during COVID19 in Edo state
  3. To determine the effect of COVID-19 on the pupil well being in Edo state

CHAPTER TWO

LITERATURE REVIEW

Coronavirus

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus.

Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment.  Older people, and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness.

The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is be well informed about the COVID-19 virus, the disease it causes and how it spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by washing your hands or using an alcohol based rub frequently and not touching your face.

The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it’s important that you also practice respiratory etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed elbow).

At this time, there are no specific vaccines or treatments for COVID-19. However, there are many ongoing clinical trials evaluating potential treatments. WHO will continue to provide updated information as soon as clinical findings become available

Impact of the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic on education

The 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic has affected educational systems worldwide, leading to the near-total closures of schools, universities and colleges.

As of 27 April 2020, approximately 1.725 billion learners are currently affected due to school closures in response to the pandemic. According to UNICEF monitoring, 186 countries are currently implementing nationwide closures and 8 are implementing local closures, impacting about 98.5 percent of the world’s student population. On 23 March 2020, Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) released a statement announcing the cancellation of Cambridge IGCSE, Cambridge O Level, Cambridge International AS & A Level, Cambridge AICE Diploma, and Cambridge Pre-U examinations for the May/June 2020 series across all countries. International Baccalaureate exams have also been cancelled.

School closures impact not only students, teachers, and families, but have far-reaching economic and societal consequences. School closures in response to COVID-19 have shed light on various social and economic issues, including student debt, digital learning, food insecurity, and homelessness, as well as access to childcare, health care, housing, internet, and disability services. The impact was more severe for disadvantaged children and their families, causing interrupted learning, compromised nutrition, childcare problems, and consequent economic cost to families who could not work.

 

CHAPTER THREE

Research methodology

Research Design

The research design adopted in this research work is the survey research design which involves the usage of self-designed questionnaire in the collection of data. Under the survey research design, primary data of this study will be collected from selected primary schools in Orebo local government of Edo state in order to determine the impact of Covid-19 on the academic performance of primary pupils. The design was chosen because it enables the researcher to collect data without manipulation of any variables of interest in the study. The design also provides opportunity for equal chance of participation in the study for respondents.

Population of Study

The population of study is the census of all items or a subject that possess the characteristics or that have the knowledge of the phenomenon that is being studied (Asiaka, 1991). It also means the aggregate people from which the sample is to be drawn.

Population is sometimes referred to as the universe. The population of this research study will be Seventy-five (75) selected primary schools teachers in Orebo local government of Edo state

Sample Size and Sampling Techniques

The researcher made use of stratified sampling technique because all the members have the same probability of occurrence. The researcher narrowed down the samples to selected primary schools in Orebo local government of Edo state in order to determine the impact of Covid-19 on the academic performance of primary pupils.

CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter is about the analysis and presentation of data collected from the field through questionnaire. The analysis of the data with particular question immediately followed by the presentation of findings.

As mentioned in chapter three, 63 questionnaires were administered and 50 were retrieved and necessary analysis was carried out on them.

Data Presentation

This is the presentation of the quantitative data collected from the respondents through the questionnaire drawn-tabulation and percent (%) age will be used to analyze the data.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Introduction     

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain the impact of Covid-19 on the academic performance of primary pupils in Edo state. In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing the challenges of Covid-19 on the academic performance of primary pupils in Edo state

Summary

This study was on the impact of Covid-19 on the academic performance of primary pupils in Edo state. Three objectives were raised which included: To find out the effect of COVID19 on education in Nigeria, to find out the challenges by primary schools during COVID19 in Edo state and to determine the effect of COVID-19 on the pupil well being in Edo state. The total population for the study is 75 selected primary school teachers. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies

Conclusion

The COVID-19 pandemic dealt a huge blow on the education sector across the world. Many studies have examined the level of this impact; however limited studies are from the vantage point of the students who constitute the major target group at the receiving end of every occurrence in the sector. Also, the impact of the pandemic on how education is being done in several areas of the world is expected to bring about new challenges and new gaps for education stakeholders to fill in the work of providing quality and affordable education. However, limited studies have sought to delineate the shape of the gaps and the actual nature of these challenges, especially as they affect students. The study therefore explored the effects of COVID-19 on academic performance of primary school pupils. Results showed that the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, despite its widespread effects. This inferentially leads to varying degrees of possible difficulty of students’ education resumption. Furthermore, the pandemic was characterized by low productivity and high anxiety among students.

Recommendation

The study encourage ministry of education to introduce online classes in case of any issue of related to COVID19.
