CHAPTER TWO

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

INTRODUCTION

Teachers in any educational system are facilitators of teaching and learning. They are the ones entrusted with the task of breaking down the desired needs of the society as specified in each subject syllabus into teachable and learnable topics in the classroom. Teachers are thus, the backbone of any educational system and could be referred to as nation builders. As a result of the important role teachers’ play in educational enterprises and the influence they have on teaching and learning, it is usually stated that ‘no educational system can grow above its teachers’. However, everybody has a complaint against the effect of biology study on professional development by teachers in secondary schools. It is dull, boring, difficult and useless from the point of views of the learner. The teachers complain of excessive workload and lack of facilities in the form of aids and equipment. Principals and management complain, ‘it is the fault of the teachers who do not make the students put in adequate labor’. These complaints have led consequently to paucity of biology teachers in schools thereby militating against effective effect of biology study on professional development in schools.

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary

The aims of the study are to find those problems militating against effective effect of biology education on professional development in Enugu north Local Government Area. Hypothesis was formulated and tested with the data generated from the questionnaire distributed to the respondents. Based on the outcome the research work is summarized as follows:

Students sees biology as a difficult subject as a result, they develop poor attitude towards the learning of biology at their level.

The study shows that the classroom is not conducive for effective effect of biology study on professional development in secondary school, This is due to the lack of adequate seat and good ventilation, which makes the classroom unconvinced for the learners.

Most biology teacher   lack the skills, attitude and competency required for  the effective effect of biology study on professional development, even thou they have the required qualification as a biology teacher.  Teaching aid s which are the instruments for effective effect of biology study on professional development are often not been used by the biology teacher.

Finally biology teachers are often not stable in one school especially those of the private school due to the low remuneration and over load of work.

Conclusion

Biology is the very basis of all sciences and technology and therefore all human progress. If we must develop technologically and our economy? We must put functional and technological policy that we help the learning of biology in its proper perspective. This can be achieved by ensuring that biology teachers are effecient and effective in rendering their service of teaching to students.

Finally the problem militating against effective effect of biology study on professional development can be minimize if we redirect our priorities and resources towards the implementation of the strategies highlighted in this research work since secondary school biology forms the gateway to he study of biology in our tertiary institutions, we must develop it now, cause the performance and those studying biology are declining daily

Recommendation

Based on the findings of this study, the researcher therefore made following recommendation that;

The effective effect of biology study on professional development should be encouraged by the teachers, the school authority and the Nigeria government at all level. By providing all the required equipment & facilities such as seat, instructional media,  conducive classroom and good textbooks. Biology textbook should provided free and available to all student at all secondary level of education.

Parent, guidance and teachers should encourage students’ attitude toward the learning of biology. They should stop telling or orienting the students that biology is a difficult subject rather biology should be seen as a simple and easy subject to understand by all students.

Students on their part should develop a positive toward the learning of biology, by studying biology on a regular basis. They should never see biology as a difficult subject, rather an easy and simplest subject among all subjects.

Students and teachers should improve their attitude, Government, school owners and parent should facilitate effect of biology study on professional development

Finally biology teachers on their part should develop a positive interest towards the effect of biology study on professional development by using the appropriate method and instructional media required for effective effect of biology study on professional development at the secondary school level of education.
