REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Introduction

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, so do the risks we face. The COVID19 pandemic has not stopped at national borders. It has affected people regardless of nationality, level of education, income or gender. But the same has not been true for its consequences, which have hit the most vulnerable hardest. Education is no exception. Students from privileged backgrounds, supported by their parents and eager and able to learn, could find their way past closed school doors to alternative learning opportunities. Those from disadvantaged backgrounds often remained shut out when their schools shut down. This crisis has exposed the many inadequacies and inequities in our education systems from access to the broadband and computers needed for online education, and the supportive environments needed to focus on learning, up to the misalignment between resources and needs. On January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that this outbreak had constituted a public health emergency of international concern (Mahase, 2020). The novel coronavirus was initially named 2019-nCoV and officially as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). As of February 26, COVID- 19 has been recognized in 34 countries, with a total of 80,239 laboratory-confirmed cases and 2,700 deaths (WHO 2020). According to recent research, similar to SARS-CoV and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), SARS-CoV-2 is zootoxic, with Chinese horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus sinicus) being the most probable origin (Chan et al, 2020 and Lu et al, 2020). Also, The Chinese Preventive Medicine Association (2020) accounted for pangolins as the most likely intermediate host of the virus. Most patients with COVID-19 represent relatively serene cases. According to recent studies (Guan et al, 2019 and Yang et al, 2019) and relevant data from the National Health Commission of China (2020), the proportion of severe cases among all patients with COVID-19 in China was around 15% to 25%. The majority of patients experienced fever and dry cough, while some also had shortness of breath, fatigue, and other atypical symptoms, such as muscle pain, confusion, headache, sore throat, diarrhea, and vomiting (Chen et al, 2020). Among patients who underwent chest computed tomography (CT), most showed bilateral pneumonia, with ground-glass opacity and bilateral patchy shadows being the most common patterns (Guan et al, 2020). Among hospitalized patients in Wuhan, around one-fourth to one-third developed serious complications, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome, arrhythmia, and shock, and were therefore transferred to the intensive care unit (Chen et al 2020). In general, older age and the existence of underlying co-morbidities (e.g., diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease) were associated with poorer prognosis (Wang et al, 2020).

CHAPTER THREE

Research methodology

Research Design

The research design adopted in this research work is the survey research design which involves the usage of self-designed questionnaire in the collection of data. Under the survey research design, primary data of this study will be collected from selected secondary schools in Yde Vii municipality in order to determine the Causes and effects of covid19 on education and students performance. The design was chosen because it enables the researcher to collect data without manipulation of any variables of interest in the study. The design also provides opportunity for equal chance of participation in the study for respondents.

Population of Study

The population of study is the census of all items or a subject that possess the characteristics or that have the knowledge of the phenomenon that is being studied (Asiaka, 1991). It also means the aggregate people from which the sample is to be drawn.

Population is sometimes referred to as the universe. The population of this research study will be Seventy-five (75) selected secondary schools in Yde Vii municipality in

Sample Size and Sampling Techniques

The researcher made use of stratified sampling technique because all the members have the same probability of occurrence. The researcher narrowed down the samples to selected secondary schools in Yde Vii municipality in order to determine the Causes and effects of covid19 on education and students performance.

In this study, the researcher used the [TARO YAMANE FORMULA] to determine the sample size.

CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter is about the analysis and presentation of data collected from the field through questionnaire. The analysis of the data with particular question immediately followed by the presentation of findings.

As mentioned in chapter three, 75 questionnaires were administered and 50 were retrieved and necessary analysis was carried out on them.

Data Presentation

This is the presentation of the quantitative data collected from the respondents through the questionnaire drawn-tabulation and percent (%) age will be used to analyze the data accordingly

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Introduction

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain the Causes and effects of covid19 on education and students performance, a case study of Some selected schools in yde vii municipality. In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing the challenges of the Causes and effects of covid19 on education and students performance, a case study of Some selected schools in yde vii municipality

Summary

This study was on the Causes and effects of covid19 on education and students performance, a case study of Some selected schools in yde vii municipality. Three objectives were raised which included: To ascertain the effect of COVID19 on educational sector in Cameroon, to find out the effect of COVID19 on student academic performance of secondary school and to find out the causes of COVID19 in Cameroon especially Yde Vii municipality. The total population for the study is 75 teachers from selected secondary schools in Yde municipality. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies

Conclusion

The national lockdown of educational institutions in Yde municipality and across Cameroon have caused a major interruption in students learning; disruptions in an academic program, suspension of terminal examination, cancellation of internal and external examination (NECO and WAEC), creating a gap in teaching and learning and probably caused manpower shortage in the institutions as a result of a death caused by COVID-19.

Recommendation

The government should increase the funding of secondary schools in next year’s budget to allow them to manage all the damages caused by the COVID-19 school close down.

The government should immediately embark on the integration of all secondary schools into online education.

The Nigeria government should direct all the secondary schools to extend physical teaching, conduct online teaching and jointly solve new problems that may arise in the teaching process.

The government should reduce the maximum number of lessons per week for teachers. This would afford them adequate time to prepare and deliver the content effectively and efficiently
