LITERATURE REVIEW

Introduction

Many researchers around the world have focused on the impact of the interaction between television and the child. These studies have highlighted the positive as well as negative results that television programs have toward children in particular. In the year 2004, Judith Van Evra conducted a very important research based on the theme of “Television and Child Development”. Here he focused on children’s television viewing and the cognitive, social and emotional development in them. Evra used 100 children aged 2-8 years for this study. Self-report measurements, observation and interview are used as research methods here. According to his research, the impact of television on child development is that children between the ages of eight spend an average of 6 3/4 hours a day using the media. It has also been found that about 1/5 of children spend less than an hour a day watching television and the media, and that even children between the ages of two and seven spend about 3 1/2 hours watching television. According to the research, television is a key part of many people’s lives and it works for children as well. With the advancement of technology, children are constantly confronted with many outcomes such as the digital revolution, the expansion of hard disks, and realistic video games, and that television continues to make a significant contribution to the lives of many children, especially adolescents. He adds that the media plays on the complex and significant interactions between a child’s lifechanging forces. He further added that the importance of media literacy and the importance of parental attention and responsibility to prevent this situation from escalating further Also in 2010, Lisa R. Snyder and Elizabeth M. Purse from the University of Delaware has conducted research under the theme of ”Audience Activity and Reality Television: Identification, Online and Satisfaction” The study sample used a total of 464 out-of-university people, 223 and 241 selected under the random sampling method from undergraduates who took the 2004 Communication Techniques course at University of Delaware. The purpose of this research was to study the cognitive and emotional state of the audience after starting a reality show. Audience performance of television reality shows has been tested by collecting data using the quiz series.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, we described the research procedure for this study. A research methodology is a research process adopted or employed to systematically and scientifically present the results of a study to the research audience viz. a vis, the study beneficiaries.

RESEARCH DESIGN

Research designs are perceived to be an overall strategy adopted by the researcher whereby different components of the study are integrated in a logical manner to effectively address a research problem. In this study, the researcher employed the survey research design. This is due to the nature of the study whereby the opinion and views of people are sampled. According to Singleton & Straits, (2009), Survey research can use quantitative research strategies (e.g., using questionnaires with numerically rated items), qualitative research strategies (e.g., using open-ended questions), or both strategies (i.e., mixed methods). As it is often used to describe and explore human behaviour, surveys are therefore frequently used in social and psychological research.

POPULATION OF THE STUDY

According to Udoyen (2019), a study population is a group of elements or individuals as the case may be, who share similar characteristics. These similar features can include location, gender, age, sex or specific interest. The emphasis on study population is that it constitutes of individuals or elements that are homogeneous in description.

This study was carried to examine television reality show and its effect on the moral and social life of adolescents in Benue state. Selected resident in Makurdi, Benue State forms the population of the study.

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the analysis of data derived through the questionnaire and key informant interview administered on the respondents in the study area. The analysis and interpretation were derived from the findings of the study. The data analysis depicts the simple frequency and percentage of the respondents as well as interpretation of the information gathered. A total of eighty (80) questionnaires were administered to respondents of which only seventy-seven (77) were returned and validated. This was due to irregular, incomplete and inappropriate responses to some questionnaire. For this study a total of 77 was validated for the analysis.

 Conclusion

From the audience angle, reality shows have provided a fresh air of entertainment. These shows are inviting, entertaining, exciting, involving, encouraging, interacting, attracting, inciting, provoking etc. reality shows and game shows rule the dominates the prime time. As result reality shows are providing very good business to the producers of the shows. There are many ethical issues related to these reality shows, which are not getting discussed in public. These issues may have diverse effect on the contestant and on viewers. These shows encourage a ruthless and inhuman competition among its contestants and convey in the society especially in the minds of children of impressionable age that for survival one has to be cruel, merciless and emotionless. These shows actually justify a brutal and selfish competition in the society that is totally contradicting modern human values in the age when we claim to be heading towards peaceful coexistence

Recommendation

Parents and teachers should team up to come up with programs that will keep children active to reduce their affinity to watching TV. Keeping the children active at home and at school will surely reduce the amount of time used watching TV.

Parents have to be sensitized regarding programs their children watch when they are left to watch, what they want on their own. Many homes can currently afford colour TVs and as such, packages specifically for children should be tailored to allow the children to watch child friendly programs. The ministry of education can be a key participant in the production of children TV program
