Student’s Perception on the Effectiveness of Sandwich Program in Biology Education
CHAPTER ONE
Objective of the Study
The objective of the study is to examine students’ perception on the effectiveness of sandwich program in biology education
The specific objectives of this study include to:
- Find out whether employment has effect on academic performance of sandwich students on biology education programme.
- Examine whether there is significant difference in academic performance between sandwich students and full-time students in University.
- Investigate the perception of sandwich student towards biology education programme.
- Investigate whether there is significant gender difference in the academic performance of sandwich students on biology education programme
CHAPTER TWO
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Prospects of Distance and Sandwich Education
One of the most promising trends for the development of modern education is distance and sandwich education particularly, on the basis of modern information technologies (Mohammed, 2017). Distance and sandwich education meet all the requirements of the new educational paradigm of the information society which guarantees lifelong learning of the citizenry (Mohammed, 2017). Indeed, the increasing demand of quality education in contemporary society, the reduction of overall cost and study flexibility, together with the availability of powerful telecommunication and computer systems distance and sandwich education have become the toast of all public and private universities in Ghana (Agyemang, 2020). A large population of students in tertiary institutions increasingly encourage the decentralization of educational institutions. This decentralized idea has been applauded by major stakeholders in order to justify their educational existence economically. One way of satisfying these requirements is to utilize distance and sandwich education (Mohammed, 2017). Researchers point out that distance and sandwich education is one of the trends in the development of information technology in education which can be as efficient as learning in traditional classrooms (Osadchyi, & Osadcha, 2015; Sysoieva, & Osadcha, 2019). Indeed, distance and sandwich education can be a significant approach to responding to the growing pluralism of learner backgrounds, characteristics, or unusual learning needs that may require or benefit from specialized training (Simonson, Smaldino, & Zvacek Eds., 2014) Africa as a continent has made considerable use of distance education to extend access to formal education, even though majority of tertiary institutions have been hampered by lack of finance and manpower. Studies in countries such as Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa establish that success of distance and sandwich education rest on the provision of adequate technological resources. As pointed out by Alfred (2014) computers and internet access create opportunities for both the students and teachers. In addition, video technologies, such as camera, cassette recorder (VCR) and discs which are widely used now are an advantage to the teaching and learning process in open education. Kaufman, Watkins and Guerra, (2001) suggest the framework for strategic planning, needs assessments and decisions making to achieve success in distance education Strategic alliance should be developed with conventional institutions, including libraries; media services, computer services, and include input of business/industry representatives, community leaders and potential students (Willis, 1998).
CHAPTER THREE
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research design
The researcher used descriptive research survey design in building up this project work the choice of this research design was considered appropriate because of its advantages of identifying attributes of a large population from a group of individuals. The design was suitable for the study as the study sought to examine students’ perception on the effectiveness of sandwich program in biology education.
Sources of data collection
Data were collected from two main sources namely:
- Primary source and
- Secondary source
Primary source:
These are materials of statistical investigation which were collected by the research for a particular purpose. They can be obtained through a survey, observation questionnaire or as experiment; the researcher has adopted the questionnaire method for this study.
Secondary source:
These are data from textbook Journal handset etc. they arise as byproducts of the same other purposes. Example administration, various other unpublished works and write ups were also used.
Population of the study
Population of a study is a group of persons or aggregate items, things the researcher is interested in gathering information relevant to students perception on the effectiveness of sandwich program in biology education. Two hundred (200) sandwich students of University of Ibadan, Oyo State was selected randomly by the researcher as the population of the study.
CHAPTER FOUR
ANALYSIS AND PRESENTATION OF DATA
One hundred and sixty (160) questionnaires were distributed and one hundred and forty (133) were returned. This figure was the sample size. Out of the one hundred and thirty-three, only one hundred and twenty (120) were properly responded to. As a result, the researcher used one hundred and twenty for this study when more than 50% of the respondents agree to the questions, the answer is taken as valid for the purpose of this study. In analyzing the data, the approach that will be adopted is to find out the percentage and positive and negative answers to the question posed.
CHAPTER FIVE
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
Introduction
It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain students’ perception on the effectiveness of sandwich program in biology education. In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing the challenges of students’ perception on the effectiveness of sandwich program in biology education
Summary
This study was on students’ perception on the effectiveness of sandwich program in biology education. Four objectives were raised which included: ) Find out whether employment has effect on academic performance of sandwich students on biology education programme, examine whether there is significant difference in academic performance between sandwich students and full-time students in University, investigate the perception of sandwich student towards biology education programme and investigate whether there is significant gender difference in the academic performance of sandwich students on biology education programme. The total population for the study is 200 sandwich students from university of Ibadan. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies
Conclusion
The following conclusion could be drawn from the analysis of data and interpretation of the
findings of the study:
- That marital responsibility and work environment significantly affects the academic achievement of sandwich undergraduate student of the University of Ibadan.
- Gender difference has nothing to do with variations in the effects of the two variables on sandwich students’ academic achievement.
Recommendation
It is recommended that sandwich students especially married ones (who constitutes about 63% of this study) should as a matter of practice, visit counselling clinics in their communities and campuses. Student should involve strategies for proper time management, effective study skills and good reading culture. Above all, the sandwich programme should be made more flexible in terms of lecture schedule to accommodate individual peculiarities. Examination and marking schemes should be structured to tolerate students’ constraints without compromising minimum academic standards.
