CHAPTER TWO
LITERATURE REVIEW
Dicey (1984) indentified some the causes of the child abandonment in Africa as poverty, broken homes, of both parents and natural disaster.
There are many factors that can lead to abandonment of child, e.g. poverty, broken homes, unwanted pregnancy death of both parents, natural disasters truancy, runaways, voluntarily placed, incarceration and neglect which is either due to adverse economic environment, unemployment massive retrenchment or even collapse of business. The poor quality of life has made parents who Dr dicey went further say that child abandonment gives room for adoption and direct sales of children in Africa or causes the rate of adoption and direct sale of children in Africa, because some of them are picked up in places like gutters, pit latrines, refuse dumps, bush path and other places like police stations and hospitals where they may be found and taken care of. For instance, in 2006, Rwanda’s minister of gender and families estimated 1.2 million children were orphaned and vulnerable. But a 2002 UNICEF study estimate 7000 street children lived in Rwanda, 3000 in the capital alone. Their lives are bleak because most of them came from families where poverty has impoverished. In 2004 UNICEF estimated 311 percent of children aged 5 to 14 were engaged in child labour.
Poverty has as well rendered so many people in imo state homeless and Nigeria at large. The divorce of both parents is a contributing factor in the problem of child abandonment. Because of divorce which has played a leading role in children been adopted and trained by another person known as the prospective parents.
A child who is born out of wed lock or who is born without adequate preparation may be abandoned in the gutters, pit latrines, or elsewhere. Such a child has no other option than to be given out in adoption for upbringing and caring. Also children who suffer loss of their both parent can be abandoned. Children who lost their parents to death sometimes may be abandoned or taken to motherless baby’s homes.
For instance, Rwanda has the highest proportion of orphans and child headed households in the world, according to a 2005 UNICEF report. Many children lost their parents in the genocides; now AIDS is creating more orphans in Africa today. The effect of HIV/AIDs has left many children in Africa to be orphans or abandoned.
According to Awake (2007) in “is God Responsible for Natural Disaster” severity of a disaster does not always relate to power of the natural forces involved. It further stated that in South America earthquakes have demolished the capital city three times in the past four hundred years.
As well as in most of the Africa were natural disaster like tsunami, earthquakes, wars famine and diseases have visited, it destroys houses, villages and even families where children could lose their parents thereby making them to be subjected of street children or orphans.
Truancy which refers to child behavior that may lead to the child’s need to be placed into foster, system is that of chronically skipping school.
Some children engage in dangerous running away behavior that parents find difficult to manage can prompt a child been sent to a foster home.
Some parents have privately placed their children into foster care due to the mentioned reason due to the child’s behavior or parent’s health.

CHAPTER FIVE
FINDINGS AND CONCLUSION
FINDINGS
This study reveals the rate of foster care and adoption in Abia state and Nigeria at large , from the analysis carried out it has been known that people engage into adoption of babies as result of childlessness , having all male or female children in marriage to mention but a few.
It has been established also that there is a strong relation between the available babies and the number of babies adopted in the home.
It was also noticed from the study that the sex of the babies does not matter in the adoption of babies.
CONCLUSION
The rate of foster care and adoption in our society has a relationship with the number of babies in the homes.
Also the adoption of babies is independent of the sex of the babies
