CHAPTER ONE

Objectives of the study

The specific objectives are as follows:

  1. To examine the role of Allied agencies in fighting terrorism in Nigerian airport
  2. To examine the effect of modern infrastructural facilities at the airport and the fight against terrorism in Nigeria
  3. To examine the factors militating against effective airport administration in Nigeria.

REVIEWED OF RELATED LITERATURE

The role of Allied agencies in fighting terrorism in Nigerian airport

The role of Allied agencies in fighting terrorism in Nigerian airports is crucial for ensuring the safety and security of air travel in the country. Nigerian airports have faced significant security challenges in recent years, with terrorist groups like Boko Haram and other criminal elements posing threats to aviation security. In response to these challenges, various allied agencies collaborate to implement robust security measures and combat terrorism effectively. Here are some key examples of the roles played by these agencies:

  1. Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA): The NCAA is the regulatory body responsible for overseeing aviation activities in Nigeria. It plays a vital role in developing and enforcing aviation security regulations in Nigerian airports, in line with international standards and best practices. The agency works closely with other security agencies to ensure compliance and coordination in implementing security measures at airports
  2. Nigerian Air Force (NAF): The Nigerian Air Force is actively involved in combating terrorism and enhancing security in Nigerian airports. It conducts regular air surveillance and patrols to monitor activities around airport perimeters, detect any suspicious movement or threats, and respond swiftly if necessary. The NAF also collaborates with other security agencies in intelligence sharing and joint operations to neutralize terrorist elements
  3. Nigerian Police Force (NPF): The Nigerian Police Force plays a critical role in maintaining law and order within airport premises. It ensures the safety of passengers, airport staff, and airport infrastructure. The NPF deploys armed officers and specialized units to provide security, conduct patrols, and respond to any security incidents or threats. They work closely with other agencies to share intelligence and coordinate security efforts.
  4. Department of State Services (DSS): The DSS is Nigeria’s primary intelligence agency responsible for counterterrorism efforts. It collects and analyzes intelligence to identify potential threats to airport security. The agency conducts investigations, surveillance, and intelligence sharing to prevent terrorist activities and apprehend suspects. The DSS collaborates with other security agencies, both within Nigeria and internationally, to enhance counterterrorism efforts
  5. Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS): The NIS plays a critical role in controlling and monitoring the movement of individuals at Nigerian airports. It enforces immigration laws, conducts background checks on passengers, and screens for potential security risks. The NIS collaborates with other agencies to identify individuals with suspected links to terrorist organizations and prevent their entry or exit from the country
  6. Nigerian Customs Service (NCS): The NCS is responsible for ensuring the security and integrity of Nigeria’s borders, including airports. It focuses on preventing the smuggling of weapons, explosives, and other illicit goods that could be used for terrorist activities. The NCS works in coordination with other agencies to enhance security and prevent illegal activities within airport premises

It is important to note that the roles and responsibilities of these agencies are not limited to Nigerian airports alone but extend to other critical infrastructure and areas of national security. The cooperation and coordination among these agencies are essential for effectively combating terrorism and ensuring the safety of air travel in Nigeria.

CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, we described the research procedure for this study. A research methodology is a research process adopted or employed to systematically and scientifically present the results of a study to the research audience viz. a vis, the study beneficiaries.

RESEARCH DESIGN

Research designs are perceived to be an overall strategy adopted by the researcher whereby different components of the study are integrated in a logical manner to effectively address a research problem. In this study, the researcher employed the survey research design. This is due to the nature of the study whereby the opinion and views of people are sampled. According to Singleton & Straits, (2009), Survey research can use quantitative research strategies (e.g., using questionnaires with numerically rated items), qualitative research strategies (e.g., using open-ended questions), or both strategies (i.e., mixed methods). As it is often used to describe and explore human behaviour, surveys are therefore frequently used in social and psychological research.

CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the analysis of data derived through the questionnaire and key informant interview administered on the respondents in the study area. The analysis and interpretation were derived from the findings of the study. The data analysis depicts the simple frequency and percentage of the respondents as well as interpretation of the information gathered. A total of eighty (80) questionnaires were administered to respondents of which only seventy-seven (77) were returned and validated. This was due to irregular, incomplete and inappropriate responses to some questionnaire. For this study a total of 77 was validated for the analysis.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Introduction

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain role of airport administration in fight against terrorism in Nigeria. In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing role of airport administration in fight against terrorism in Nigeria

Summary

This study was on role of airport administration in fight against terrorism in Nigeria. Three objectives were raised which included:  There is no significant influence of allied agencies in fighting terrorism in Nigerian airport, there is no significant influence of modern infrastructural facilities at the airport and the fight against terrorism in Nigeria and there is no significant influence of factors militating against effective airport administration in Nigeria. A total of 77 responses were received and validated from the enrolled participants where all respondents were drawn from ministry of aviation , Abuja. Hypothesis was tested using Chi-Square statistical tool (SPSS).

 Conclusion

Overall, the study underscores the critical role of airport administration in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria. By implementing comprehensive security measures, fostering collaborations, and embracing technological advancements, airports can become robust barriers against terrorist activities. It is crucial for policymakers, airport authorities, and relevant stakeholders to prioritize and invest in these measures to ensure the safety and security of travelers and the nation as a whole.

Recommendation

Based on the findings of the study on the role of airport administration in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria, the following recommendations are proposed:

  1. Strengthen intelligence sharing: Enhance collaboration between airport administrators and intelligence agencies to ensure timely exchange of information on potential threats and emerging trends in terrorism. Establishing dedicated channels for intelligence sharing and conducting regular joint intelligence briefings can significantly improve the effectiveness of counterterrorism efforts.
  2. Continuous training and capacity building: Implement regular training programs for airport personnel, including security staff, to enhance their skills in threat identification, emergency response, and the use of security equipment. Training should be updated regularly to keep pace with evolving terrorist tactics and technologies.
  3. Implement advanced screening technologies: Invest in state-of-the-art screening technologies such as body scanners, explosive detection systems, and facial recognition software to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of security checks. These technologies can improve the detection of concealed threats while minimizing inconvenience for passengers.
