CHAPTER ONE

Objective of the study

The objectives of the study are;

  1. To identify the type of television programmes/contents that not recommendable for viewer
  2. To ascertain the relationship between television programme and social vices in Ogun state
  3. To ascertain the effect of television programme on habit of viewers

CHAPTER TWO  

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

CONCEPT OF TELEVISION

Television is an electronic medium used in disseminating information to a wide and diversified audience. Nwosu (2005, p.164) states that: Television is the medium that possess credibility, audio visual qualities, and can be utilized in virtually development communication. The above statement shows that television possesses the ability to bring changes, which could be either positive or negative. Agba (1998, p.17) asserts that: Television messages tend to sound more authentic in that their signals engage both the auditory and visual senses not to mention their sensual component. Anunike (2000, p.98) maintains that: Television is one of the audio and visual media of mass communication; this is made possible with the use of camera and microphone.   A look they say is worth more than thousand words. It is however, based on this that television viewing goes a long way in altering the attitudes, beliefs, perceptions and general behaviour of children and this has therefore formed the basis of this research work

BRIEF HISTORY OF TELEVISION

Television has been the most important invention in communication technology today, after the printing press. It’s invention has changed the way various professionals operate. It has changed the nature, operations and relationships of their audiences to books movies and radios. Baran (2006, p.244) It was in 1884 when Paul Nipkow, a Russian scientist living in Berlin developed the first workable device for generating electronic signal suitable for the transmission of a scene that people could see. According to Baran (2006, p.422): Vladimir Sworykin demonstrated his konoscope tupe, the first practical television camera tube in 1923. At the same time, young Philo Farnsworth has moved from Idaho to San Francisco to prefect an electronic television system…. In 1927, at the age of 20, he made his first public Demonstration. The first two commercial stations took off in 1941. The World War II brought about technical development and improvement of the new media continuedSince then, television has improved over the decades as communication medium.

 

CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research design

The researcher used descriptive research survey design in building up this project work the choice of this research design was considered appropriate because of its advantages of identifying attributes of a large population from a group of individuals. The design was suitable for the study as the study sought Impact of Television Programming on Prevalent of Social Vices in Ogun State

Sources of data collection

Data were collected from two main sources namely:

Primary source and Secondary source

Primary source:

These are materials of statistical investigation which were collected by the research for a particular purpose. They can be obtained through a survey, observation questionnaire or as experiment; the researcher has adopted the questionnaire method for this study.

Secondary source:

These are data from textbook Journal handset etc. they arise as byproducts of the same other purposes. Example administration, various other unpublished works and write ups were also used.

CHAPTER FOUR

PRESENTATION ANALYSIS INTERPRETATION OF DATA

Introduction

Efforts will be made at this stage to present, analyze and interpret the data collected during the field survey.  This presentation will be based on the responses from the completed questionnaires. The result of this exercise will be summarized in tabular forms for easy references and analysis. It will also show answers to questions relating to the research questions for this research study. The researcher employed simple percentage in the analysis.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Introduction

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain Impact of Television Programming on Prevalent of Social Vices in Ogun State

In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing the challenges of Television Programming on Prevalent of Social Vices

Summary

This study was on Impact of Television Programming on Prevalent of Social Vices in Ogun State. Three objectives were raised which included: To identify the type of television programmes/contents that not recommendable for viewer, to ascertain the relationship between television programme and social vices in Ogun state and to ascertain the effect of television programme on habit of viewers. In line with these objectives, two research hypotheses were formulated and two null hypotheses were posited. The total population for the study is 200 staff of selected secondary schools in gun state. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. A total of 133 respondents made up principals, vice principals administration, senior staff and junior staff were used for the study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies

Conclusion

From this study, it was concluded that  youths are much familiar with the television set. This is evident via their access to television set and they watch it daily for different purpose on an average of 2 hours. The society seems to be less concerned about students‟ exposure to the television set. This is because it is the same society that had enabled and encourages the use of the television set without considering it influence on young people. The society seems to be quite ignorant about the harm that can be caused by electronic media to the students. Also, available data analysed from the study indicated that different television programmes are viewed by the students‟ base on their favourite programmes which ranked films/movies as their mostly viewed programmes and frequent viewership of foreign television channels. Some of the programme contents seemed to influence the habit formation of the students the students negatively. This is why some negative behaviors have persisted in students especially vices such as violence, aggression, nudity, poor academic performance, bad sexual behaviour and drug abuse

Recommendation

  1. Parents and teachers should team up to come up with programs that will keep children active to reduce their affinity to watching TV. Keeping the children active at home and at school will surely reduce the amount of time used watching TV.
  2.  Parents have to be sensitized regarding programs their children watch when they are left to watch, what they want on their own. Many homes can currently afford colour TVs and as such, packages specifically for children should be tailored to allow the children to watch child friendly programs. The ministry of education can be a key participant in the production of children TV programs.
