Chapter One
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The objectives of the study are;
- To investigate staffs attitude in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Hospital, Bauchi, Bauchi state
- To ascertain the attitudes and behaviours of nurses towards patient care from the nurses’ perspective
- To ascertain the attitudes and behaviours of nurses towards patient care from the patient’s perspective
- To ascertain the factors that contribute to staff’s attitude in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Hospital, Bauchi, Bauchi state towards patient care.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
CONCEPTUAL REVIEW
Attitude
The dictionary meaning of ‘attitude is settled behavior as indicating opinion’. Thurstone (1928), has defined attitude as “the sum total of man’s inclination and feelings, prejudice or bias, preconceived notions, ideas, fears, threats and convictions about any specific topic”. Attitude is a subjective and personal affair. The term ‘opinion’ symbolizes an attitude. In fact it is the verbal expression of attitude. Apart from the term attitude has been defined differently by different authors. A few of these definitions are-
- Attitudes are individual’s mental processes which determine both the actual and potential responses of each person in a social world. Since an attitude is always directed towards some object, it may be defined as” the state of mind of the individual towards a value”.
- Attitude is a mental and neural state of readiness organized through experience exerting a directive or dynamic influence upon the individual’s response to all objects and situations with which it is related.
- Attitude is the predisposition of the individual to evaluate some symbol or object or aspect of his world in a favorable manner.
- An enduring system of positive or negative evaluations, emotional feelings, and pro and con action tendencies with respect to a social object.
- An attitude is the degree of positive or negative affect associated with some psychological object.
- An attitude, roughly, is a residuum of experience, by which further activity is conditioned and controlled. We may think of attitudes as acquired tendencies to act in specific ways towards objects.
Social psychologist, unfortunately, do not agree on the precise definition of an attitude. However, four definitions are more commonly accepted than others. One conception is that an attitude is how positive or negative, favorable or unfavorable, or pro or con a person feels towards an object. This definition views attitude as a feeling or an evaluative reaction to objects. A second definition represents the thoughts of All Port, who views attitude as “learned predisposition to respond to an object or class of objects (e.g. a product, category, a brand, a service, an advertisement or a retail establishment) in a consistently favorable or unfavorable way”.
This definition incorporates the notion of a readiness to respond toward an object. Thus our orientation towards people, objects, and events is guided by attitudes. Attitudes are learned from our socialization process. A large section of Indian population has a negative attitude towards nonvegetarian dishes. Attitudes may change e.g. we loved savings previously, but none prefer to splurge our income for a better life style. Canned foods were frowned upon a few years ago but now we have come to accept them. Attitude influence purchase decisions e.g. investment in stocks is preferred by risk taking individuals.
CHAPTER THREE
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Introduction
This chapter deals with the method used in collecting data required in carrying out this research work it explains the procedures that were followed and the instrument used in collecting data.
Sources of data collection
Data were collected from two main sources namely:
(i)Primary source and
(ii)Secondary source
Primary source:
These are materials of statistical investigation which were collected by the research for a particular purpose. They can be obtained through a survey, observation questionnaire or as experiment, the researcher has adopted the questionnaire method for this study.
Secondary source:
These are data from textbook Journal handset etc. they arise as byproducts of the same other purposes. Example administration, various other unpublished works and write ups were also used.
Population of the study
Population of a study is a group of persons or aggregate items, things the researcher is interested in getting information for the study impact of staff attitude on patronage. The researcher randomly selects 100 staff of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital and patients in Bauchi, Bauchi state as the population of the study.
CHAPTER FOUR
PRESENTATION ANALYSIS INTERPRETATION OF DATA
Introduction
Efforts will be made at this stage to present, analyze and interpret the data collected during the field survey. This presentation will be based on the responses from the completed questionnaires. The result of this exercise will be summarized in tabular forms for easy references and analysis. It will also show answers to questions relating to the research questions for this research study. The researcher employed simple percentage in the analysis.
CHAPTER FIVE
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
Introduction
It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of staff attitude on patronage.
In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing the challenges of impact of staff attitude on patronage.
Summary
This study was on impact of staff attitude on patronage. Four objectives were raised which included: To investigate staffs’ attitude in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital, Bauchi, Bauchi state, to ascertain the attitudes and behaviours of nurses towards patient care from the nurses’ perspective, to ascertain the attitudes and behaviours of nurses towards patient care from the patients’ perspective, to ascertain the factors that contribute to staffs’ attitude in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital, Bauchi, Bauchi state towards patient care. The total population for the study is 100 staff of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital, Bauchi and 100 patients. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. A total of 133 respondents made doctors, nurses, men patients and female patients were used for the study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies
Conclusion
Numerous factors in the work environment affect health care workers subsequently, the quality of care they are able to provide for patients. Increased workload, challenging patients, limited education, little moral support, minimum opportunity to spend time assessing and caring for patients, and a lack of a protocol and guidelines perpetuate a cycle is not recognized. This research is a beginning in understanding staff attitudes especially health care staff toward caring for patients Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital Bauchi. Results from the current study revealed that nurses are motivated to provide quality care and that they respond positively to education, training and care protocols. However, the burden of care-giving and the lack of resources of time and peer and physician support continue to impact staff in the daily care environment. In this study, nurses revealed significant improvement in attitudes toward knowledge, competence, confidence and ability to identify and understand the consequences of following an education intervention. The intervention included education regarding the nature of sickness and training in the implementation of an assessment tool and care protocol. Desire for ongoing education and mentoring remained strong after the intervention
Recommendation
Effective care for patients is also important for the larger healthcare environment which must spread financial resources across an increasingly growing older population. Should be a monitoring team after the attitude of health care staff and treat them accordingly
