LITERATURE REVIEW

 Introduction

This chapter reviews studies that contribution to understanding of the study and the assessment of the students’ performance towards the use of social media in political science at Abia state University Nigeria. The main sources of the information are research findings, journals, text books and the internet.

The concept and definition of Social Media

The advanced and improved usage of social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp etc. has become a worldwide phenomenon for quite some time. Though it all started has been a hobby for several computer literates individual has changed to become a social norm and existence-style for students around the world (Nicole, 2016).

Social Media according to Wikipedia.org is defined as:

  1. Computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks. The variety of stand-alone and built-in social media services currently available introduces challenges of definition; however, there are some common features:
  1. Social media are interactive
  2. Internet-based applications
  3. User-generated content, such as text posts or comments, digital photos or videos, and data generated through all online interactions, is the lifeblood of social
  4. Users create service-specific profiles for the website or app that are designed and maintained by the social media
  5. Social media facilitate the development of online social networks by connecting a user’s profile with those of other individuals or

Social Media users typically access social media services via web-based technologies on desktop, computers, and laptops, or download services that offer social media functionality to their mobile devices (e.g., smartphones and tablet computers). When engaging with these services, users can create highly interactive platforms through which individuals, communities, and organizations can share, co-create, discuss, and modify user generated content or pre-made content posted online.

Observers have noted a range of positive and negative impacts of social media use. Social media can help to improve individuals’ sense of connectedness with real or online communities, and social media can be an effective communication (or marketing) tool for corporations, entrepreneurs, non-profit organizations, including advocacy groups  and political parties and governments. At the same time, concerns have been raised about possible links between heavy social media use and depression, and even the issues of cyber bullying, online harassment and “trolling”. Currently, about half of young adults have been cyber bullied and of those, 20 percent said that they have been cyber bullied regularly. Another survey was carried out among 7th grade students in America, which is known as the Precaution Process Adoption Model. According to this study, 69 percent of 7th  grade students claim to have experienced cyber bullying and they also said that it is worse than face to face bullying. However both the bully and the victim are negatively affected, the intensity, duration, and frequency are the three aspects that increase the negative effects on both of them.

According to Nicole, (2016), students and teenagers have especially recognized these social media platforms to be able to contact their peers, share information, reinvent their personal information and showcase their social lives.

Facebook users often experience poor academic performance. Also Karpinski (2015) stated that social media has a negative association with students’ academic performance which is much greater than the advantages derived through the use of social media in political science platforms. People around the globe have been addicted to the internet which has given rise to more students using social media more often than before.

CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

 INTRODUCTION

According to Bakar (2016) states that questionnaires to acquire primary data are the best suitable research based on experiment, observation and survey. Hence, the survey method can supply researchers with data on attitude, feelings, beliefs and Envisioned behaviour that is said by Tull and Kawkins (2016). Additionally, the assembling of different kinds of information from the respondents, questionnaires will be appropriate for this research which will enable get the actual information from the target population.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The data collected through a structured questionnaire was administered through one-one in- depth interview with identified sample group of students at Abia state University Nigeria.

DATA COLLECTION TOOLS

Data collection of this study consists of the structured interviews for both male and females students at Abia state University. The questions were designed in such a way that it was easy to collect quantitative data as well. The structured questionnaire used was pre-tested before the actual data collection exercise in order to check for accuracy, consistency and uncertainty.

TARGET POPULATION

The target population in this study consisted the students of Abia state University Nigeria; Total number of the targeted males and females respondents in my study was 30 members

The population was sampled and interviewed in order to collect the relevant and adequate information for the successful completion of the study.

CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS

 INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents and analyses the data that was collected during the research study that was conducted at Abia state University Nigeria in Lusaka. The information collected depicted below in the form of tables and figures.

CHAPTER FIVE

ANAYSIS AND DISCUSSION OF FINDINGS

 INTRODUCTION

More and more educators have explored Web-based applications by providing discussion forums as extension to, rather than replacement for, “conventional” education. One plausible reason is as follows. As an important component of learning, interpersonal relationship may foster the exchange of information and knowledge, or may enhance learning motivations. Such a role could not be easily replaced by only computer technology. Even for pure online learning, exchange of information and social support with others may enhance student performance and satisfaction.

For example, Sarah and David found that online conversations are more social in nature and that interactive messages seem to be humorous, contain more self-disclosure, display a higher preference for agreement, and contain many first-person plural pronouns. This indicates that interpersonal interaction plays an important role in online learning.

The relationship between network structure and learning has been investigated since the inception of stoichiometry decades ago. However, few researchers have examined the effects of network structure on learning achievement. The empirical study demonstrated that network structure is related to student performance both in the classroom and on the Web-based forum. The relationship between network structure and student performance might be reciprocal, that is, there might be no implicit causal relationship behind this relationship. This study further demonstrated that the three types of network, friendship, advice and adversarial, might be related to student performance both in the class and on the discussion forum.

OVERALL FINDINGS

  1. If the advice network has determining effects on political education of college of education student, then what are the implications for instruction design? A Web-based forum may offer an excellent medium for students to communicate with each other, a chance to express them, and an environment with fewer problems, such as those connected with
  2. If knowledge is mainly constructed through interaction among students and between students and their instructor, then interactions among students should be strongly Then, a Web-based forum may provide students a field where they can freely discuss, ask questions, give opinions, and learn after class.
  3. There are several methods that can enhance online learners’ interactions, such as provision of a controversial topic for debate or structuring a Controversy. Some hot debates (such as Microsoft’s privacy invasion, fast-food selling skills, and others) occurred in this study during some weeks. Stimulating students’ interaction and providing appropriate feedback may become a teacher’s main tasks.
  4. Future work should focus on the design and management of learning structures in a way that promotes network development. For example, it is important to know what should be included in a class discussion and what should be left or extended to the forum. The future challenge will be how to design different instruction and discussion sessions online and offline in order to fully exploit the advantages of students’ social networks.

CONCLUSION

The study gives the educational and confirming information. In recent years, use of social media in political science has become very popular all around the world due to a great development of technology. Not only celebrities but general public has also turned out to be a huge user of these social media sites.

The basic purpose behind conducting this study was to see the academic outcome of student who spend most of the on such interacting sites. The findings from conducted studies has find out to be mostly positive because students spend time of their day activities on these social media sites have able to share and generate new ideas and concepts related to their studies they also use these sites for having fun as these social websites are helpful in their academic work. Use of these interacting social media has become the routine habit of student they

spend the major part of their time on these sites for entertainment and also concentrate on their studies. Students are a precious asset of any country. Through these social websites they do their academic work with enjoyment.

The study was conducted to examine the impact of students’ use of social media in political science sites on their academic performance. The study revealed that majority of the respondents had mobile phones with internet facility and had knowledge of the existence of social media sites. As a result they visit their social media sites and spend between thirty munities to three hours every day. In addition, the study revealed that the use of social media in political science had affected academic performance of the respondents negatively and further confirmed that there was a strong Positive relationship between the use of social media in political science and academic performance.

 RECOMMENDATIONS

  1. The Management of Abia state University should ensure that Students with phones having internet facility are encouraged to either using it to complement their research in the library rather than the usual chatting with friends all the
  2. Students should be advised by the management of Abia state University to limit the time they spend on social media sites per day and encourage them to rather substitute those hours to read novels and relevant academic books to improve their
  3. Since the study confirmed that the use of social media in political science sites had affected the academic performance of students negatively, there is the urgent need for the Management of Abia state University to introduce methods of how students will access availability of books and other information resource or materials in the library that can help them
  4. The Management should advise students during orientation on the dangers of addiction to social networking sites. They should be introduced to sites that can add values to their academic work and research.
  5. Instead of restricting access to internet facilities the librarians and management should educate minors on how to participate responsibly, ethically and
