Effects of Indecent Dressing in the Nigerian Educational Institution: a Case Study of College of Education, Ekiadolor-Benin
CHAPTER ONE
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The main motive of the study is to investigate the effects of dressing in the Nigerian educational sector. Indecent dressing in higher institutions of learning, emphasis on college of education, Ekiadolor, Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. This study is to find out whether students of higher learning can still dress decently.
This study intends to find out possible solutions to indecent dressing in the Nigerian educational sector. Many teachers, administrators, security personnel, counsellors are worried when it comes to evaluating indecent dressing.
CHAPTER TWO
LITERATURE REVIEW
MEANING OF INDECENT DRESSING
Very culture according to articles based.com has it dressing code that may vary according to certain and this is that every culture has an acceptable dress code. So every dress judgment of the community is termed indecent. The term decency and indecency have as so much to do with the morality of the individual person and as judged by others. A dress is said to be indecent when it has provocative or stimulating influence on almost all those that happen to view it on the view it on the user. Egwin (2010) referred to indecent dressing in a more specific term as the attitude of someone, male or female that dresses to show parts of body such as the breast, buttocks or even the underwear particularly those of the ladies that need to be covered. This exposure is obviously a deliberate act to look sensuous, tantalizing and stimulating so as to draw the attention of the opposite sex and is more prevalent among singles (unmarried women and men). This form of dressing is provocative (Olori, 2003). Improper and immorally offensive and reveal the high rate of moral decadence in the society of our time. In what form of this dresses?
HISTORICAL DEBATE
Does dress code affect students performances? Educators and the public are divided over the value of implanting school dress code policies in the Nigeria universities and colleges (Anderson, 2002). This topic has been debated for the provision, fifty years and has a long history of advocated and opponents (Brunsma, 2004). The history of this debate began during the 1950s when strict dress code prohibited girls from wearing pants and boys from wearing sideburns. The supreme court of USA ruled in 1969 in Tinker vs Demonies independent community school that students freedom of expression in school must be protected unless it causes a substantial disruption of school activities and invasion of the right of other this landmark case provided a frame work of determining students rights concerning dress code policy (Proquest, 2009).
The historical timeline of the dress code debate continued in 2001 with Littlefield vs Formey School district still in USA when the 5th circuit court of appeal ruled in favour of a school right to complement a mandatory school, uniform policy. Decision that the policies do not violate the first amendment rights of students (Proquest, 2009). The debate over dress code in Nigeria universities and colleges as being vehemently enforced time ago in college of education, Ekiadolor and in the faculty of education Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma encompasses many larger issues than simply what students should wear to school.
CHAPTER THREE
METHODOLOY OF THE STUDY
This chapter describes the procedures and method adopted by the research to find effects of indecent dressing in the Nigerian educational sector.
RESEARCH DESIGN
In the course of investigating this research problem the survey method was adopted since it facilitated the gathering of much information relating to the topic of the study.
POPULATION OF STUDY
The targeted population of the research study comprises of some selected students from the various schools in the college of education, Ekiadolor-Benin which was estimated to be about 4,000 students. The table below shows the breakdown of the population in the various schools.

The sampling size of this study was 140 and the administered questionnaires were properly in the table below;

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
SUMMARY
The aim and purpose of this project was to identify the effects of indecent dressing among students especially in college of education, Ekiadolor in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The result indicated that youth or students who involved themselves in indecent dressing perform badly in their academics; it causes failure sexual victimization among others.
The result also shows that poor pressure (age groups, friends, and relations) have impacted on indecent of students in higher of learning peer pressure makes students fail to distinguish between what is fashion and indecent dressing. Finally, it was observed that the society has a great influence on indecent dressing of students in higher institution of learning, the child lives in a community and so he or she is influenced by what goes on in the community either directly or indirectly.
CONCLUSION
The research work revealed that the school management, general public and the government have their own contribution to correct indecent dressing among people and students in the higher institution of learning. School management should assign men and women to monitor students and ensure that immoral dressed ones are embarrassed and sent back to dress properly. Many Nigerian ladies of higher institution of learning dress immodestly, this dress pattern has negative consequences that may still not be known to those who dress immorally. It is in the light of this that this work examine the causes and effect of indecent dressing and suggest solutions that could reduce the rate of spread of this immoral act.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Recommendation put forward includes;
- Parents should show good moral example to their children, given them attention and regulate the films they watch at homes, the media should promote good moral values.
- Religious leaders should preach against counsel and deliver those under demonic influence, as well as introduction of college or university dress code or uniform for students.
- The Nigerian universities and colleges administrators as gatekeeper must develop a Nigerian, cultural inclination and consciousness that will allow for the wearing of dresses reflecting the Nigerian morals and culture.
- The Nigerian university and college authorities most especially the educational sector should also create and project policies in their both staff and students to speak decency. This will make student to identify themselves Africans and not initiators of European and Americans.
- A policy should be formulated to ensure that professional take charge of checking students and staffs to ensure that they comply to laid down dress code and ensure that violators are strictly penalized.
