Chapter One

 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The general objective of this study is to analyze effective communication and organizational performance in Nigerian Breweries Plc while the following are the specific objectives are to:

  1. Examine the relationship between internal communication and financial performance in Nigerian Breweries Plc, Iganmu, Lagos State.
  2. Identify the external communication techniques that improve job quality in Nigerian Breweries Plc, Iganmu, Lagos State.
  3. Determine the effect of the use of ICT on several tasks completed in Nigerian Breweries Plc, Iganmu, Lagos State.

Chapter Two

Literature Review

 Conceptual framework

Communication has been widely accepted by scholars and academies as the life hood of an organization because communication is needed for exchanging information, exchanging opinions, making plans and proposals, reaching agreement, executing decisions, sending and fulfilling orders and conducting sales (Blalock, 2005; Alyssa, 2006; Rotler, 2006; amongst others). When communication stops, organized activity ceases to exist, and individual uncoordinated activities return in an organization. So, organization in an organization is an virtual as the blood of life.

Definitions of Communication

Ramah (1985) defines communication as “the transmission and reception of ideas, feelings and attitudes verbally or non-verbally to produce a favourable response”.

Draft (2000) defines communication as “the process by which information is exchanged and understood by two or more people usually with the intention to motivate on influence behavior”.

Communication refers to the exchange of information between a sender (source) and a receiver (destination) so that it is received, understood and leads to action (Obamiro, 2008).

Obilade (1989) defines communication as “a process that involves the transmission of message from a sender to the receiver.

Folarin (2003) defines communication as “any means by which a thought is transferred from one person to another”.

Communication is the process by which any person or a group shares and impacts information with/to another person (or group) so that both people (or groups) clearly understood one another (Soola, 2000).

Not just giving information, it is the giving of understandable information and receiving and therefore, the transferring of a message to another party so that it can be understood and acted upon (Ode, 1999).

Ugbojah (2001) defines communication as “the process which involves all acts of transmitting messages to channels which link people to the languages and symbolic ……… which are used to transmit such messages. It is also the means by which such messages are received and stored. It includes the rules, customs and conventions which define and regulate human relationship and events”.  In its simplest form, however, communication is the transmission of a message from a source to a receiver… or the process of creating shared meaning (Baran, 2004:4).  It has been shown that there exists various definitions for communication, as there are different disciplines. While some definitions are human centred, others are not. For example, communication system may incorporate computers, as well as less soplusticated reproducing devices such as photocopiers. A photocopier may see communication as meaning different thing from the way a marketer preconceives it. Similarly, a gospel preacher may think communication is something, which is of course different from what a journalist thinks it is.

 

CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

 Research Design

This study adopted a Descriptive/simple survey research design. A survey research design according to Osuala (2001) centers on individual and their opinion, belief, motivation and behavior. The design was considered suitable since the study will solicit information from respondents in Lagos.

 Area of the Study

The study is conducted in Nigerian Breweries Plc., Iganmu Lagos State.

Population of the Study

The population of the study comprised all the employees of Nigerian Breweries Plc., Iganmu Lagos State as at the time of this study.

CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS

 DATA PRESENTATION  

This chapter deals with the presentation and analysis of the data generated during the empirical study of the organization under study. Data presentation will be done using simple percentage as a statistical tool.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND  RECOMMENDATIONS

 Summary

From the analysis made so far it had become evident that communication breakdown has effect in the management of an organization. Communication as a catalyst for establishment and accomplishment of an organizations goal cannot be overstressed. The object of emphasis in this research work dwells on effective communication system both the executive leaders make sure they are informed as those in the lower cadre. This is necessary because any breakdown in communication would be a catastrophic to the life of the organization. Communication in an organization helps in the flow of information, motivation of workers and enhancing industrial harmony in the organization among others. It is important to note that communication is indispensable in the survival of any organization. It integrates various departments together and they work harmoniously to achieve the organizational goals and objectives. For management, communication helps to ensure compliance to rules and regulations, policies and as a medium to ensure effective control of staff activities and behavior.

The employees will get informed and abreast with the activities of the organization. This is turn increase productivity level because it is only then workers feel accepted and well integrated into the organization. Good communication system in a company enhances good public relation between the employers, customers, shareholders and government. Finally, effective communication cab be viewed as a tool for effective management, defining responsibilities of subordinates and setting standard for performances

CONCLUSION  

 It is clarify evident from the findings of this study that communication is an important tool for management. Effective communication leads to organizational effectiveness. This is reasonable evidence that if an organization is effective in its communication, it will be effective overall. Any organization without a well-established communication system no matter its personnel policies may be bound to operate in uncertainties and risk. Communication is not an independent activity of management but an essential part of what every worker in Nigerian Breweries Plc., the situation showed that there is a proper and effective communication system in the company. The workers are happily working co-operatively and that helped in enhancing their productivity. The company operates both upward and downward communication channel as opened by the personnel manager.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the findings from the study on the effective communication system and in light of data collected by personal observation and though the questionnaire conducted in the organization; it is necessary to offer the following recommendations.

  1. Management should introduce training, programmes in the organization whereby junior workers would be taught how to communicate effectively. This is necessary because poor academic background of these workers constitute problems to effective communication in the organization.
  2. Management should continue to keep in touch with the workers on new development in the company. This would enable workers to know what is going on in the organization and this sustains their interest in working assiduously.
  3. Management should not relent in encouraging free flow of information in the organization, as this would motivate workers and encourage them to achieve the goals of the organization.
  4. Workers in Nigerian Breweries Plc. should always seek for clarity in matter which is not clear to them from the management.
  5. Management of Nigerian Breweries Plc. should also continue encouraging workers participation in decision making.
