Drug Abuse and Guidance Services in Secondary School in Maiduguri Metropolis Council Implication for Counselling in Borno State
CHAPTER ONE
Objective of the Study
The researcher aimed at achieving the following objectives,
- To identify the drugs that are commonly abused and factors associated with such drugs abuse.
- To determine there is gender differences in relation to drug abuse among secondary school students.
- To find out whether guidance services are adequately provided.
CHAPTER TWO
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Conceptual Frame Work
Drug abuse has been a major problem caused by many factors. Some of these factors include social, political, legal, and cultural. More of these factors determine the types of pattern of drugs that are abused in Nigeria.
This review of related literature focuses on the attitude of students towards drugs abuse and its effects on the academic performances of students in secondary schools in Maiduguri metropolis council. The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) reported, that in the early sixties cannabis and amphetamine were abused and which were seen as potentially harmful to the society. So there is no doubt that many literatures have been written on drugs abuse and the danger of drugs abuse on the individual, and the society at large. Many researchers and surveys have been conducted by various individuals and organizations, sociologists and medical personnel to find out why people take drugs. It is not and overstatement to say that a god percentage of people in our society today would need to have adequate information on the negative role drugs played in the lives of human beings. On the other hand, quite a number would prefer to reject any discussion on the subject especially, where the negative, aspect are brought to bear in the discussion. However, position one takes in this matter the fact still remain that, the issue of substance abuse is of national and international significance, and expected to catch the attention, of all sundry.
According to African Council on Narcotics, drug abuse has been identified by the ministerial committee on Governmental Organization (1998) of the World Health Organization as a “monster” which does not only rob the children, adolescents and adults of their cherished dreams or goals in life, but has also succeeded in punctuating their lives prematurely leaving behind bitter memories.

METHODOLOGY
In this chapter, the researcher discusses the various methods employed in the collection of information for the study. The methodology is the discussed under the following heading:
Research Design
The study adopts the survey design. Sought for the opinion of teachers about the prevalence of drug abuse and the necessary role of guidance and consoling services in curbing drugs abuse in secondary schools.
According to Ndogi (2014) survey research is a descriptive research in which information is obtained from the sample of the respondents for testing hypothesis concerning the status of some educational problems.
Also Nwada (1981) said that the survey method constitutes the population to be studies which could be people institutions or things as the case may be “it is one of the comprehensive methods in getting peoples opinion in relation to the topic under study especially when using questionnaire.

CHAPTER FIVE
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Summary
This chapter of the study summarized the whole of work done on the research finding. Chapter one of this work deals with the back ground of the study, statement of the study and finally operational definition, of the term.
Chapter two discussed the review of the related literature which involved the concept of drugs abuse and guidance and consoling historical trend in drugs abuse, drug that are commonly abuses by students causes, of drug abuse and its effect. Chapter three discussed, the design of the study, population/sample, research instruments, procedure for data collection and method of data analysis. Chapter four of this work was on data analysis, interpretation and discussion of the results, and this was achieved by using simple percentage in a tabular form.
Conclusion
In conclusion the study surveyed drug abuse among secondary school students in Maiduguri. It was concluded that secondary school students often engage on drug abuse such as alcohol, cigarette, valium, marijuana. Also it was gathered that there is no gender difference when it comes to drug abuse more so, guidance services were not provided in secondary schools.
Recommendations
The following recommendations were made based on the finding, of this study.
- School authorities should sensitize students on dangers of drug abuse more often in addition to National Drugs Laws enforcement agency N.D.L.E.A and National Agency for Food and Drugs Administrative and control NAFDAC campaign on such cases.
- School authorities and agencies saddle with drugs control should be sensitive on gender when it comes to campaign on drug abuse.
Ministry of education should engage services of experience guidance counsellor in secondary schools to curtail drug abuse and other social vices.
