Design and Fabrication of a Metal Bookshelf
CHAPTER ONE
PREAMBLE TO THE STUDY
A bookshelf is an invention with partition where books and files are packed on offices, libraries and even homes.A bookshelf can be wooden, metallic or even glass. They can also be dismountable and undismountable. In our project, we dedicated to design and fabricate on undismountable met6allic bookshelves. Certain advantages were considered before starting off this project. An undismountable metallic bookshelf, if built with lart and serer its purpose. Also, loss of parts, of many dismountable bookshelf led into considering one undismountable type.
CHAPTER TWO
MODE OF OPERATION
The mode of operation, in the various stages taken to fabricate this undismountable metallic bookshelf. These include marking out, cutting, welding, smoothening/fitting, cleaning pointing.
MARKING OUT
This involves the use of tapes and scribers to mark out dimensions on the surface of the sheets and low with the aid of a tri-square and templates to indicate on the work surface the points and analyses it out.The material was first marked giving an increase of are least 5mm and later to the actual diameter.
CUTTING
This involves the shining of the work material to the required or measured dimensions. The material were at the various shape required for the tesigpes. Using the guillotine cutting machine and hacksaw for bars and small easy cutting.
WELDING
This is the fusion of two metal together by the use of electrodes through electricity supply ton the welding machine. This was used to erect the frame work together and attack the other sheets to the frame.
This welding was done using a 12 gauge electrode for maximum rigidity.
SMOOTHERING AND FILEING
After the exiting of the whole system, rough and deep edges were smoothened and filed with energy boards and fillers. This helps in giving the project a more smooth and attractive finish before it was painted.
PAINTING
This is the lart process on the stages of our fabrication. It was done to give the project on attractive out look and to making it long by preventing moisture which leads it to corrosion. A Grey oil point (a mixture of black and Ash)m painted was used which have great properties of preventing corrosion.
CHAPTER THREE
DESIGNS
Before any fabricated object can be used fanably, the design of different components materials selected and also the design analysis must be carefully considered.
DESIGN ANANLYSIS
The design process must anticipate and integrate p5rovision for marketing, maintance and ultimate replacement of products. For design process analysis to be accomplished the following must be studied.
- Conceptual stage
- Acceptance stage
- Functional stage
- Translation stage
- Production stage Looking into there different design processes.
CONCEPTUAL STAGE
Our decision to emba5rk on this project- design and fabrication of an undismountable bookshelf on to produce a system that can be to carry book, files etc. in office, home, nor libraries that could save a long time without loosing its credibility, so the idea of an undismountable metallic bookshelf was chosen.
ACCEPTANCE STAGE
After our conception to embark on this project we went further to check the probability of our project being achieved. This was done by embarking on a market survey, checking on the availability of materials and experimentory on the design of a book rack that could withstand tensile stress from a load as much as 630kg. Having considered all this, we finally accepted to carry on this project.
CHAPTER FOUR
COST ANALYSIS
This is the cost study of the materials used in the fabrication of this bookshelf for convince it is broadly divided into four namely:- material cost, machine cost, labour cost and transportation cost.
MATERIAL COST
A market survey was carried out on order to determine the coverage cost of the materials used for this project and below are the results obtained.
MACHINE COST
Although, it is difficult to access the machine. Cost full cost study should be made for machines used to produce the pieces of system. Such machine are cutting machine, welding machine and filling machine.
CHAPTER FIVE
CONCLUSION
The design and jubilation of the project was carried out by us. All the experimental design was conducted doing the fabricat6ion of the project. Before we started the fabrication of the type of bookshelf, we made a lot of consultation and research on the type of design to be fabricated. The design was chosen because of its rigidity and its ability to last for a long time. The capacity was designed to hold large number of books and with the mention that it can be supplied to our heatovers officers for books and files keeping. The completion of the project was due to the joint effect and dedication of those involved in its fabrication in the whole process was carried out atTrans Ekulu Enugu, due to the last of space and constant interception on the schools Mechanical Engineering Workshop.
RECOMMENDATIONS
We will recommend that further designed and modification should be carried out so as to meet the technological standard and challenge facing the world at large.
We are suggesting that for the improvement of technology in our community that other preto type our model be invented to give different styles.
