Chapter One

Objectives of Study

The objectives of this study will be enumerated below

  1. To discover if bilingualism has any effect on cognitive ability
  2. To determine if there is a significant relationship between bilingualism and academic success

CHAPTER TWO

LITERATURE REVIEW

Introduction

Succeeding academically is a major driving force for going through school, for many students, consequently if for any reason a student is not able to achieve this, it becomes a hindrance to the student. While there has been much research on academic success and bilingualism individually, few researchers have sought to find out the relationship between the two, in Nigeria. The conceptual framework, theoretical framework, empirical framework and the gap in existing literature will be outlined in this chapter.

Conceptual Framework

 Academic Success

Academic success has varying definitions depending on the circumstance. Students often see academic success as, ‘doing well’ or ‘passing’ in school. This usually means being able to meet or surpass an institution’s academic requirement. A definition from IGI Global states academic success as a measurement including any/all of the following examples for students: testing scores, GPA, individual course grades, teacher evaluations, assignment grades, etc. Academic success allows students to meet their individual goals and objectives.

Individual Course Grades

Grades are very critical in a student’s academic career and grading systems differ around the world. The grading system is usually determined by a country’s educational policy and may sometimes be adjusted by individual institutions, after going through a set of guidelines and policies. The focus of the grading and reporting system should be the improvement of student learning and development (Lin and Miller, 2005 p.367). According to Lin and Miller (2005) there are different grading systems that would be highlighted below:

Traditional Letter Grade System – This system uses a single letter grade (e.g., A, B, C, D, F) for each subject. In some cases, a single number (e.g. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, or 100, 95, 90) is used instead of a letter, but the grading system is essentially the same.

Pass-Fail System – In some elementary schools, a two-category system (e.g. satisfactory-unsatisfactory, pass-fail) has been used for many years. t is an easy system to use, but it offers less information than the traditional (A, B, C, D, F) system. It provides no indication of the level of learning, and thus its value for describing present performance or predicting future achievement is loss.

Though the grading systems are not limited to the ones above, these are the ones most traditionally used.

 

CHAPTER THREE

 METHODOLOGY

The aim of this chapter is to describe procedures and methods that will be used in conducting this study.

Research Design

Research design can be seen as the blueprint of collection, measurement and analysis of data. The design chosen for this work, is descriptive survey design. The Quasi-experimental design will be used to carry out this research.

Population

The population selected for this study is Babcock University High School, in Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, Nigeria. The school has approximately 1,000 students.

CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION

INTRODUCTION

This chapter delves into the presentation, analysis and interpretation of results based on the data generated from the respondents. Furthermore, the Pearson correlation analysis was employed to test the four hypotheses formulated. Also, the findings were explicitly discussed.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

The study examined the effect of social responsibility on church growth, a study of Babcock University High School Students in Ilishan Remo, Ogun State Nigeria. The study employed the survey design and the purposive sampling technique to select 450 Babcock University High School Students in Ilishan Remo, Ogun State Nigeria. A well-constructed questionnaire, which was adjudged valid and reliable, was used for collection of data from the respondents. The data obtained through the administration of the questionnaires was analyzed using the Pearson correlation analysis.

The results showed that there is there is correlation between Bilingualism and academic success (r=0.772; p<0.05). Furthermore, a positive and significant relationship exists between bilingualism and academic success (r=.896; p<0.05). The results were found to be consistent with empirical findings of past studies in literature.

Thus, bilingualism is a crucial factors and strong predictors of academic success.

CONCLUSION

This study has concentrated on the sampled Babcock University High School Students in Ilishan Remo, Ogun State Nigeria

In conclusion, the study hereby concluded that bilingualism is a strong determinant of academic success among Babcock University High School Students in Ilishan Remo, Ogun State Nigeria.

POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the findings of the study, the following policy recommendations are suggested:

  • Babcock University should include French and other languages like German, Spanish, China as a GST course in order to add to the students quality in outside world.
  • Babcock University should help other students that already have the quality of bilingualism get a job in the embassy of the language 4the students specialize.
  • Babcock University needs an urgent reappraisal.  Babcock University management have expressed that they need to interrogate the definitions and movements that have proliferated – and arrive at common positions of what is the bilingualism in the academic success.
  •  Babcock University must become contextually relevant to students.  The Babcock University needs to become strategic in assessing societal challenges and develop appropriately structured language programmes.

 SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER STUDIES

Future studies should be conducted to examine students of other schools like; UNILAG, LASU, U.I, EKSU, UNIBEN etc.
