A Design of a Batik Duvet Exploring Uli Motifs
CHAPTER ONE
The objective of this research work is to enlighten/educate both the public and practicing artist in the industry at home and in Diaspora of the value and usefulness of Uli motifs in the production of good artworks, moreover for proper documentation.
- Another significant thing in this research work is to emphasize/project the rich cultural heritage of the Ibos of eastern Nigeria, which is gradually going into extinction due to western influence on diverse cultural identities of our people.
- Importantly, the knowledge of Nigerians about the Eastern (Ibos) cultural heritage will be broaden especially the acts of Igbo’s Uli body decoration which is the bedrock of this research work.
CHAPTER TWO
LITERATURE REVIEW
ULI DESIGN MOTIFS
Uli is a wall and body decoration art done on a woman’s body by the Igbo women for adornment during marriages festivals, new yam festivals, rituals activities etc. According to Ochigbo,S.Best,Ph.D, the origin of uli symbols in Igboland is not known. But it is believed that they have developed out of natural love for aesthetics or as a vehicle for
magic and religion. Emotan (2005: 135). Furthermore, udechukwu (1990: 16) opines that it could have started as a form of sign language or some kind of cosmetic art. It is also a common belief that uli art started as a body adornment created mainly by Igbo women who used traditional dye to create intricate design patterns on the bodies of maidens and walls of shrines. Uli refers to the indigo dye obtain from several species of plants like Uli Oba (Rothmania Whitfield), Uli Nkilisi (Rothmani Hispiole), uli Edeji (Rothmania Cuspica) and Uli Okolobo (Rothmania urcelli) (ikwemesi,1992:6). Uli also is the art of tradition itself as Udechukwu (1972:6) observes that it could have been a form of sign language. According to Ikwemesi (1992:7) agrees with Udechukwu when he submit’s that “the meaning of what uli artist draws depends on the iconographic codes of the entire village” as a single meaning and interpretation varies from region to region. “Thus the leopard motif for instance, may symbolize bravery and greatness in one region, while in another it merely denotes the people’s right to the land.” Here are symbol of some of Igbo uli motifs, name symbol and meaning as compiled by (Ochigbo,S.B.(Emotan,2005) & (Nwanna,C.E (ajofaa, volume 2)
CHAPTER THREE
METHODOLOGY
This chapter is concerned with the description of the methodology involved in this Project.
THEME AND SUBJECT MATTER
The theme of this project is the creation of a batik duvet using Uli motifs as a design. The essence of this research work is to enable practitioners/clients know the value and usefulness of uli design.
CHAPTER FOUR
PROJECT ANALYSIS
DESCRIPTION OF THE STAGES
This chapter deals with the detail description of the process in this project
STAGE 1: preliminary sketches, motifs and color experiment Having gone through several class and industrial training assignments and personal sketches and different color experiments, it became easy for the researcher to know the challenges she will encounter in the course of doing this research work.
CHAPTER FIVE
SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION
SUMMARY
Textile is one of the needs of man that he cannot do without; it has been in existence from the origin of man and time. According to genesis 3vs7b, “and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons” the story in the Garden of Eden brought the understanding of the origin of textile. Textile plays an important role in all of our activities and in our homes that means textile can never be over look.
CONCLUSION
Duvet covers are less more expensive and being something everybody appreciate it is important to make it more homely by using our own design. Promoting our cultural motifs is one of the ways of showing our heritage. It keeps the memory alive and makes us appreciate different ethnic groups in our land it is on this premise that the researcher deemed it necessary to bring it nearer home in promoting our culture.
