CHAPTER ONE

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The primary objective of this study is to critically analyse the causes and impact of Premarital Sex among females students in secondary schools. Other aims of this study are:

  1. To examine the factors that contribute to premarital sex among female students in secondary schools.
  2. To examine the effects of premarital sex on the academic performance of secondary school students.
  3. To determine the solutions to the factors that contribute to premarital sex among female students in secondary schools.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITRERATURE

Conceptual Framework

Concept of Sex

Sex refers to the biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women. It entails biological or physical distinctions between males and females, including primary sex characteristics (the reproductive system) and secondary characteristics such as height and muscularity. Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR, 2015) defined sex as a set of biological attributes in human and animals which is associated with physical and physiological features such as chromosomes, gene expression, hormone levels and function, and reproductive anatomy. Sex is usually categorized as female or male but there is variation in the biological attributes that comprise sex and how those attributes are expressed. Sex in the context of this study refers to the insertion and thrusting of the penis, usually when erect, into the vagina for sexual pleasure, reproduction or both. This is what links up with the issue of premarital sex.

Concept of Premarital Sex

Whenever people who are not married are indulging in sexuality or experiencing sexual intercourse for whatever reason, premarital sex is said to be established. It is the experience or indulgence of two or more people who are not officially married in sexual intercourse. Ajiboye, Aina, Oyebanji and Awoniyi, (2014) consider premarital sex as the involvement in sexual intercourse by persons who have not engaged in marital vow or culturally recognized as having been enrolled in marriage institution. Pre-marital sex, intercourse that is committed between two or more persons before entering a commitment of holy marriage

Theoretical Framework

Lckek Ajzen Theory of Planned Behaviour

The study is theoretically guided by Lckek Ajzen’s theory of planned behaviour which was propounded in 2006. This theory looks at the attitudes 14 toward behaviours and the factors influencing behaviour. It also provides an understanding of how a person’s perceptions of the behaviour can be a good indicator of whether the behaviour will occur. This study is partly considering the causes and attitude of secondary school students towards premarital sexuality, and this is in alignment with the basic tenets of the theory of planned behaviours. The ability to comprehend certain behaviours and learn how they can be changed is a major premise of the theory of planned behaviour.

CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, we described the research procedure for this study. A research methodology is a research process adopted or employed to systematically and scientifically present the results of a study to the research audience viz. a vis, the study beneficiaries.

RESEARCH DESIGN

Research designs are perceived to be an overall strategy adopted by the researcher whereby different components of the study are integrated in a logical manner to effectively address a research problem. In this study, the researcher employed the survey research design. This is due to the nature of the study whereby the opinion and views of people are sampled. According to Singleton & Straits, (2009), Survey research can use quantitative research strategies (e.g., using questionnaires with numerically rated items), qualitative research strategies (e.g., using open-ended questions), or both strategies (i.e., mixed methods). As it is often used to describe and explore human behaviour, surveys are therefore frequently used in social and psychological research.

POPULATION OF THE STUDY

According to Udoyen (2019), a study population is a group of elements or individuals as the case may be, who share similar characteristics. These similar features can include location, gender, age, sex or specific interest. The emphasis on study population is that it constitutes of individuals or elements that are homogeneous in description.

This study was carried to examine a critical analysis of the causes and impact of premarital sex among females students in secondary schools. Selected secondary schools in Itak, Akwa Ibom state form the population of the study.

CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the analysis of data derived through the questionnaire and key informant interview administered on the respondents in the study area. The analysis and interpretation were derived from the findings of the study. The data analysis depicts the simple frequency and percentage of the respondents as well as interpretation of the information gathered. A total of eighty (80) questionnaires were administered to respondents of which only seventy-seven (77) were returned and validated. This was due to irregular, incomplete and inappropriate responses to some questionnaire. For this study a total of 77 was validated for the analysis.

TEST OF HYPOTHESIS

H1: there are no factors that contribute to premarital sex among female students in secondary schools

H2: there are no solutions to the factors that contribute to premarital sex among female students in secondary schools

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Introduction

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain a critical analysis of the causes and impact of premarital sex among females students in secondary schools. In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing an a critical analysis of the causes and impact of premarital sex among females students in secondary schools

Summary

This study was on a critical analysis of the causes and impact of premarital sex among females students in secondary schools. Three objectives were raised which included:  To examine the factors that contribute to premarital sex among female students in secondary schools, to examine the effects of premarital sex on the academic performance of secondary school students and to determine the solutions to the factors that contribute to premarital sex among female students in secondary schools. A total of 77 responses were received and validated from the enrolled participants where all respondents were drawn from selected secondary schools in Itak, Akwa Ibom state. Hypothesis was tested using Chi-Square statistical tool (SPSS).

 Conclusion

It is obvious from the above that premarital sex has been on the increase despite all efforts been made at curbing it in the society. Anam community in particular remains under threat by premarital sexuality. This is because many young people or students in that area are actively involved in it. The perception of students in relation to premarital remains discouraging.

However, the society must not relent in its efforts to curbing the menace of

amateur sex practices. Therefore, all hand must remain on deck towards arresting the ill notion students have about premarital sexuality.

Recommendation

The Federal Government of Nigeria and the State Government should promulgate a decree and enact an edict banning the importation and use of pornographic materials. The sale of contraceptives and condoms should be supervised, to reduce the ill information pattern on sex to adolescents and adults in the society, and Anam community in particular.

Counsellors should constantly be in contact with the youths to educate them on sexuality and how best to manage their sexual feelings without necessarily engaging in premarital sex. Counsellors should help to enlighten adolescents on healthy peer friendship to discourage bad influence.
