LITERATURE REVIEW
This study is primarily concerned with the academic performance in education of day students and boarding students in Idia college secondary school, Benin City, Edo State. The literature review however is broadened to include the existing conditions in the above said secondary school and also some environmental and economic factors that could affect the academic performance of students.
A lot has been done to assess the factors that affect student’s academic performance. The roles played by the school and parents cannot be over emphasized. The school for instance plays a very important role in the student’s academic performance. The part played by the school in a child’s life and many educationalists all over the world have speculated development. School exists in order that children may be lead forward from childhood to the threshold of maturity. The child develops as a whole, each development is a progress of the other that implies that development are interrelated, some of these development are physical social and mental development by Eduwen (1999). It is seen as a continuous process. A child development at each stages of life is influenced by his experience at the earlier stage, so the school system need to be equipped with an adequate knowledge of the psychology of children their fundamental needs, their problems and the forces that modify and produce behaviour change that are vital for their future course of life.
The school prepares the child to take his or her place in the adult world. The school is therefore the scene of many experiences through which students learn about themselves through the work they do, the activities they take part in and the relationship that they form. Indeed, the school can be seen as a community in which situations are created in which discoveries are made not only about the subject matter and skill thought, but also through them about their selves. So the influence of the school good or bad should be a life long influence. It is life long because children are in the care of the school during some of their most impressionable years. Since the students haven’t moved from secondary school to an higher institution, so fatr then to experience the physical and emotional changes of adolescent and to explore their own independence more fully, their attitudes towards adults will change and her peer will assume new importance in he4r experience. He or she will be expected to focus his or her mind on his or her own future and also to take responsibility for choices that will shape it. As she gradually w8ithdrawes from the adult centred relationship which characteristics the earlier years, she often establish norms of behaviour which is her way of exploring her increasing sense of freedom, her values, attitude and general behaviour depends on the approval of her peer.

A total number of 120-day students and boarders which are girls and boys were used for this study. Their research questions were formulated and tested through sample percentage method of analysis. The literature reviewed were the works of European and African scholars. Their works showed that a lot of factor such as the socio – economics back ground of parents, environmental and emotional problems could affect the academic performance of students.

A student attitude to his academic work determines to as a great extent his academic achievements.
Being a boarding or day student cannot be a factor that can affect or influence a student’s academic performance.
Parental education and socio – economic status have little, great or no influence on the choice of studentship.
RECOMMENDATION
It has been observed that the boarding system supports corporative and competitive behaviour among students. It is therefore recommended that the government should try and reduce the boarding fees to the greatest maximum so that both the poor parents can afford it and also be able to provide materials for their children.
The school administrators with the help of the teacher should see that students coming from home and the boarding student students be adequately supervised so as to enable them utilize their time meaning fully. This is to ensure that the money spent by their parents or guardians on their behalf are not wasted.
Libraries should be provided for students to make use of after school, and the public libraries should be expanded to as accommodate more users.
All new schools must as possible be located with in a community which it should serve such a school must be within walking distance so that day students do not have to walk long distance before getting to school.
Guidance and counselling should be intensified so that students could be guided and counselling on how best to improve on their academic performance. Any secondary school without a guidance counselling is not worthy to exist.
Lastly, more research should be carried out in the best method of determining student’s academic performance since examination is not the truest test of knowledge as the saying goes.
