Chapter One

Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of these study is to design and implementation an interactive system for prospective NYSC members with all basic information needed for  the camp orientation. This is to be achieve through the following ways:

  1. develop a database system that will keep records of all registered members within the state.
  2. Develop an efficient and user friendly registration system for the participating members of the orientation camp.
  3. Develop a login platform where users can personalize to keep copies of all documents required during the camp.

CHAPTER TWO

LITERATURE REVIEW

Overview of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Programme

The National Youth Service Corps was established by degree 24 of May 1973. However, the founding decree has been replaced with decree 51 of 16th June, 1993. It is also important to mention that the scheme is established to promote the ideals of national unity and a sense of common destiny among Nigerians and eliminate mutual suspicion and mistrust that has been engendered by the civil war. The objectives of NYSC are to:

  • promote unity and national integration
  • raise the moral tone of the youths by exposing them to higher ideals of nation building;
  • promote national economic, development/mobility of labour into less developed areas and
  • encourage employers to employ Nigerians irrespective of their background or ethnic origin (NYSC ACT).

The National Youth Service Corps was established  with the mandate to raise a class of patriotic, morally and physically disciplined Nigerian youths who graduated from Universities and Polytechnics to undertake the National Service. During the mandatory one year service, corps members live among and within the host communities facilitating unity and integration as well as championing community development by executing projects jointly with the people of their host communities (Okeke,1999).

Nigerians graduates from universities, polytechnics (at HND level) and other degreeawarding institutions that are not more than 30 years of age whether locally or foreigntrained are eligible to serve. The people who are exempted from service include;graduates who are above 30 years on graduation, those who have served in any of thearmed forces or national security agencies for at least nine months, and thoseconferred with national honours. Graduates with national honours are to submit copiesof their identity card, relevant enlistment/award letters. Graduates of part-timeprogrammes, and diploma programmes in universities and polytechnics are alsoexcluded from the service. The NYSC service is stipulated to last for continuous period of 12 calendar months less terminal leaves of 21 days. Doctors/Pharmacists could defer their service to carryout housemanship/internship, while lawyers serve before or after law school.

In accordance with the decree 51 of June 1993, only successfully graduated candidates in the various certificate/diploma or degree examinations are qualified to be called up for services in the NYSCscheme. Only such candidates are qualified to collect their CALL-UP letters from students Affairs Offices of the respective institutions. All prospective corps members are issued with call-up letters on graduation from their respective institutions. The letter informs them of their states of deployment, the orientation venues and the date they should report to the NYSC Orientation camps. The objectives of the orientation course outlined below as detailed in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Decree 24 of 1973 will further highlight the essence of the orientation programme:

  • develop in the corps members attitude of minds acquired through sharedexperience and suitable training which will make them more amenable tomobilization in the national interest.
  • to prepare corps members for their particular roles in the scheme
  • to acquaint them with their environment in their political, cultural, socialand economic setting.

 

CHAPTER THREE

SYSTEM ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

Introduction

System analysis is a process whereby the system under study is carefully examined to determine or find out areas of inefficiencies with the view of arriving at a new system that addresses the issues. Asika (2006) defined it as any organized enquiring that aims at providing information for solving identified problem. It is after the careful examination of the system that a program can be designed for the proposed system. The researcher’s carries out a detailed analysis of the present system, which is the manual system.

A system analyst analyzes systems before the system could be developed so that the mission and the goal for developing the system could be met. A system that is not properly analyzed must surely have weaknesses in its operations. Analyzing a system simply means studying the system (knowing why the system will be developed, how to go about developing it, knowing the right tools for developing it). This is a standard development process that defines a set of activities, methods, practices and tools that system analyst used in analyzing both existing and proposed systems. It incorporates all the activities taken place in the phase or level of the analysis. Such phase or levels are preliminary investigation phase, problem, design phase and implementation phase.

CHAPTER FOUR

SYSTEMS DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION

Introduction

This chapter focuses on the design of the new or proposed system. The design of all the graphical user interfaces and database are captured here. For optimum and better design of the new system, the old system was scrutinized carefully to identify its problems then the new system was formed which would deal with the problems of the old system.

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary

This research work  led to the implementation of an information system for the Anambra state NYSC camp ground, this enables corps members undergo every necessary registration at the comfort of their homes, before the camp orientation session begins and also enables the management have an accurate account of the all details of the registered corps members, compiled in a relational database for easy retrieval.

The Object Oriented Analysis and Design Model (OOADM) was used in the analysis and design of the system; this is due to the fact that the model provides an appropriate and efficient way of splitting individual entities in object, thus making it easy to analyze objects and modifies its functionalities. Again OOADM incorporates the use of UML diagram in its design to model these objects in a comprehensive way. This system was implemented using PHP and JQuery (for the back-end design), HTML &CSS (for the front-end design), and MYSQL (for the database design).

 Recommendation

For an optimal use of this system , the researcher recommends an adequate training for all staff who will use the administrative module of the system, this will enable an effective user experience. Again, during this research, we practically observed that the  strength of  internet  communication network is very poor within the  NYSC camp region, hence researcher recommends the installation of a strong internet connection network within camp regions to enable the new system function at its best.

Suggestion for Further Research

Due to time constraint, this research focus on just one state (the Anambra state NYSC orientation Camp, Umunya). The researcher suggests on further research, an enlargement to the scope of this work, which will  accommodate various NYSC Orientation camps in the remaining  thirty five state(35) states in Nigeria.

Area of Applications

This project work is limited to NYSC Orientation Camps Management in Anambra states but can also be useful to other orientation camps within the country. Both corps member  andNYSC management bodies are main actors which this system favours.

Conclusion

NYSC orientation camp information system is designed to overcome the problems encountered with the existing system (i.e manual) such as prone to attack, data redundancy, time wastage in searching for information, poor security and protection, misplacement and mismanagement of files etc. The new system is designed in such a way that information about each corps member in an orientation camp is stored in a database for easy retrieval of information. This makes the process for camp registration and management very easy for the corps members and also for the management agencies.
