Electronic Learning System for Educational Institutions (A Case Study of National Institute of Information Technology (NIIT) Benin City
Chapter One
PURPOSE OF STUDY
There is already recognized fact that the need for educational experience is rapidly growing. However one major impact of the internet is the neatly packaged target market. Passion for and uses of learning grow in a way that has little to do with demographic. Therefore the flexibility provided by education becomes especially important and the new meaning of access to education is quite individualized, that is enabling individuals make their decision regarding their private and public lives generally. Students appreciate the convenience, choice and flexibility that online courses offer. This study also aims at describing a web-based learning flexibility and cost effectiveness as contrast to classroom learning but it can also be colossal waste of time and money if not implemented correctly. One of the problems of E-learning is the cost of maintaining the software as the National Institute of Information Technology (NIIT) are finding ways to bring three benefits of the classroom into a distance leaving setting like the Microsoft Certified Engineer Examination.
Throughout this project, the keyboards and phrases of E-learning, distance learning, distributed learning, web-based, distance education, learners centred programs and online learning are used as interchangeable terms, moreover, the study seek to throw more light on the operational infrastructure of creating a more effective, efficient and accessible learning teaching environment, which is critical to web-based learning/teaching success. More often these elements are over-looked or seen as incident to the design and quality of the learning materials themselves. The key success factor of teaching/learning is oriented towards generating students who will become autonomous. Educational process means, the ability to learn. So the self learners use the media in order to get support of the internet in quality. The misconception that delivering online causes/diminished the personal connection between students and teachers, which on the contrary, present a new universe opportunities and possibilities for creating individualized, highly effective environment that enhance and personalized the learning experience. The advantage of online learning out weight the disadvantages for both the learner and the teacher.
CHAPTER TWO
LITERATURE REVIEW
INTRODUCTION
The promise of distance education to provide high quality educational program, that can be undertaken anywhere and at any time are not new. Similar promises were made in the 20th century by correspondence study programs. These programs failed to realize their promise because they were confronted by a fundamental trade-off between quality models. When higher education confronted this trade-off, they decide to choose the quantity model, the choice eventually led to a widespread dissatisfaction with the quality of correspondence education.
Just like everything new, people refuses to believe that this strange new way of learning/teaching can be done. Rapid advances in information technology and easy access to the internet are reshaping educational institutions by providing new learning environments and new ways to teach. At its worst web-based learning is a poor substitute for classroom experience. But at its best, the unique attribute of online course enables learning model (Arghan, 2001). Therefore to achieve the best possible effective learning environment, students must have the technology and the training on how to use effectively the technology and the role of the instructor as experts in learning process, design, control and implementation process.
Availability of the instructor to serve/teach individual student as a motivator, a mentor and a caring communicator is the key to success. Learning is the act or process of developing skills or knowledge. Modern web-based learning provides the means for changing fundamentally the way in which instruction is delivered to students. Multimedia learning resources combined with workbooks attempt to explore the essential concepts of a course by using the full pedagogical power of multimedia. Many websites have nice features such as interactive examples animation, video, narrative and written text. This web site is designed to provide students with a “self-help” learning resources to complement a traditional textbook. Some multimedia can be presented on CD ROM or DVD. If bandwidth is significant issue your principal partners here will be your university media services to external suppliers and increasing libraries will become involved. In earlier pilot studies, by Mann, 13, (1997) and Ward M. and Newlands (1998), they compared the relative effectiveness of three versions of hypermedia system namely sound text and sound/text. The result indicates that those working with sound understand better than those working without sound and stated their displeasure with reaching so much text from the screen. Based on this study, it is clear at least this time that such web-based innovations cannot serve as an adequate substitute for face-to-face or live instruction.
However, developing online learning is typically an intense process, which should take much of the faculty development time. Students today no longer spend their time in a lonely little room, a noisy lecture room, and a dead silence in the huge reading room of a University or Polytechnic library. These components of learning environment still exist, but their functionality has changed. Web-based courses delivery is the beginning of a new way of technology development in higher education. The supporting evidence of its effectiveness might be the highest change in technology innovation on campus, if used effectively. Beside the required textbook, a collection of online resource replacing the traditional printed materials in the library must be provided. The Java Applets are the most phenomenal way to simplify various concepts by way of interactive processes. These amplest help ring into every concept from central limit theorem to interactions, random games and multimedia applications.
CHAPTER THREE
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY
This chapter examines the research design and methodology adopted in the study. In the investigation, it was discovered that the case study approach is a very convenient and reliable method to gather data in the various stages of carrying out the research objectives, using the National Institute of Information Technology (NIIT) as a major case study especially in the areas of software and hardware that are currently being used to implement e-learning environment.
POPULATION SAMPLE
A total of 25 questionnaires were distributed to students in the school: National institute of Information Technology Benin in Edo State. Twenty five students (25) were randomly selected from among the total number of students in the school. This number was considered as representative sample, by the researcher.
CHAPTER FOUR
DATA ANALYSIS
This chapter is set aside from respondents on Electronic Learning System for Educational Institutions. As discussed in chapter three of this study, the items on the questionnaire centred on some research question raised to ascertain the effect of electronic learning system in educational institute.
The discussion and analysis of the data’s collected are briefly discussed based on each question in the questionnaire.
CHAPTER FIVE
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
SUMMARY
This chapter is set aside to summarize the descriptive analysis done in the previous chapters. It will also contain the conclusion and recommendations on the research topic “electronic learning system for educational institutions: A case study of National Institute of Information Technology Benin”.
Educators today are using distance education and internet-based learning as methods for delivery courses. There are many software packages specifically designed for electronic learning (e-learning), such as web-CT, blackboard and Prometheus. Teaching styles have to be adapted to this new environment since the internet as a medium fir course delivery is different from the traditional teaching settings. Lecturers and students will have to adjust to the pedagogy that uses instructional technology as an integral component in teaching and learning in order to be successful with online learning classes.
CONCLUSION
The rapid growth of information coupled with the ability to exchange it more rapidly among more people than ever before is creating a new environment for education. Many universities are negotiating for their standing as the defect source of scholarly knowledge in the new environment. Hundred of universities of every sort have been putting some basic courses upon the web. Using some times pedestrian software and students are generally comfortable with them (Longe, 2004). Community colleges and regionally universities that have slowly organically moved into the online arena, doing their old job in a new way have succeeded where the flashy business types and big time private schools have not.
Though, these institutes are being organized for lectures to prepare them for take-off of online education that was introduced in most universities in Nigeria, thus making them very prepared as e-learning is incepted. The web based learning atmosphere allows more effective interaction between the students and instructor by the use of highly interactive software’s being developed by using any of the available language; authoring packages, learning management system (LMS), content management system (CMS) with the characteristics like maintenance, compatibility, usability, modularity and accessibility features to enable both the learners and instructors have a pleasant experience. Therefore, e-learning can be effective as the traditional classroom learning environment where space, seating etc could be adequate. Online learning teachers you how to think before writing in a disciplined way of communication. It demands discipline of both and instructors and students. There is less physical touch but much intellectual touch.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The researcher would advise any intending researcher making researches on similar subject to use both observation and documentation method to get varieties of points that can allow further conclusion to be drawn. The researcher also recommends that for any subsequent research for this project topic, there should be as assessment documentation and reference study to our own online education that is now coming up like the virtual institute for higher education pedagogy (VIHEP) and the National Higher Education Pedagogic Centre (NHEPC) in order to bring the research back home.
