CHAPTER ONE

PURPOSED OF THE STUDY

Basically the purpose of this study is to ย ย ย gain understanding of the effects of primordialism particularly ethnicity on Nigeria political development.

It is our belief that because of the dominance of primordialism in Nigeria polities. Some analyst ย ย entirely from the perspective, the impression of given that the political process is determined and controlled by primordial elements. Shortcoming ย and defects ย of the ย Nigeria political system are as resulting ย fro ย this ย phenomenon, thus ย their resolution is seen as ย laying in ย balancing ย these primordial interest.

It is ย ย our belief that while it is ย ย possible to have some awareness of the nature of Nigeria from this perspective as an explanatory framework, it is highly ย ย defective. It is defective because it simple takes the question of primordialisms.

CHAPTER TWO

LITERATURE REVIEW ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย

A good number of books have been selected for revision here. This ย study is in agreement with ย view of the Scholar ย who ย contends that literature ย view is not ย conclusive ย as additional ย literature and source will be ย examined as the research ย progresses, since ย it is generally, believe that the literature on ย ethnicity is vast. The ย role of ย ethnicity ย in instituting ย or throating ย process of social change ย is a factor that has recently become ย most ย relevant in regard to ย the less developed area of the ย world. In ย the limited ย discussion ย that has touched this point divergent vowed have been ย expressed by ย different ย authors ย on ย ethnicity , ย where some ย of them ย that see this ย variables from the Marxist view points, other ย explore liberal ย point of views as I have earlier ย stated, the method ย of ย analysis ย used in this project is the maxiraian dialectical method of analysis, which gives primary to material conditions particularly economic factor in the explanation of social life. As Elude Ake would concede, dialectical method refuses to look at aspect of the world (in our case ethnicity) as simple identities or discrete element or as being static. This method encourages us to think of world in terms of continuity and relatedness and with a keen awareness that this continuity is essentially very complex and also problematic.

MEANING OF DEVELOPMENT

Development involves the entire social as โ€œthe process of allowing and encouraging people to meet their own aspirationโ€

Development is a tri-dimensional concert. It has a utilitarian or consumatory dimension, which connote increase in the quality of usable items available to man in society. It also has behavioural or rational dimension, which define the nature of the relation among man in society and among societies.

Thirdly, there is an institutional or structural and legal framework circumscribe the behaviors of men and streamlines their relationship which they individual and collectively seek to gain greater access to material things of value in society fundamentally, development is therefore made of three components.

  1. The control and utilization of economic resource for the benefit of all.
  2. The use of cultural values to promote growth pride and dignify.
  3. The liberation of individual and groups from the strong hold of international imperialism.

It is in this regard that Seers (1963) suggests that the b questions, to ask about development are:

  1. What has been happening to poverty?
  2. What has been happening to unemployment?
  3. What has been happening to inequality?

If and when all these questions have been less severe, then beyond doubt, there has been a period of development. If one or two of these have been growing, it will be strange and absorb to call the result development even if per capital income increased. In reviewing the concept of development Seers asserted that other essential elements to be include is self-reliance. To this end the main emphasis in development would no longer be an Overall growth rates or no pattern of distribution but an ownership a well as out put in the leading economic sectors.

CHAPTER THREE

METHODOLOGY

This research work tends to investigate and evaluate the ethnicity and the issue of political development in Nigeria.

The ย highlights ย area in this ย chapter are area of ย study, design of the study, the population of the study, instrument ย for ย data collection, validation ย of the instrument, sample of the study ., distribution ย and retrieval ย ย of the instrument and ย method of data analysis.

BRIEF OUTLINE OF THE STUDY

The research was carried out with the view of evaluating ethnicity and the issue of political development in Nigeria.

In the ย chapter, the planning ย process of ย data collections ย are designed , which includes ย where when and ย how to collect ย the date which are analyzed and processed to ย obtain an information ย upon which the ย recommendation ย and finding would be ย based on.

CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION

In this chapter, adapt collected for the people of tackling the research question posed the testing hypothesis formulated in the study were presented and analysis.

The researcher used table and sample percentage and frequency also to own inference from each analysis.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY OF ย ย FINDINGS

The important finding which emerged clearly from the analysis in the preceding chapter are the increase of ethnic inhabit national development. The ย continuation of ethnic favour with regard to ย competence ย and ย qualification is ย really as threat to ย then well beings and ย stability ย of this ย country and ย constitute an impediment ย to national ย political and economic development. Eliminating ethnicity and other elements of non-continuities in this political process should be fundamental objective of this ย nation in addition, there should be a defined directive principle ย guide the leaders in their effort to achieve ย these ย objectives.

Ideology is a guide to political actions Nigeria as a country should be said to have no defined ideology. Lack of ideology to guide the political development of Nigeria as made her political system inveterate. Many Nigerians have been calling for creation of more states as a solution to ethnic politics and political instability in Nigeria. To ย me, this will not even ย solve the problem because ย these ย demand are just ย efforts of various region ย faction ย of the ย privileged class to ย carves out ย their ย own sphere of economic domination.

RECOMMENDATIONS

  1. A ย constitution ย while providing for ย ย power ย must ย lay down ย certain duties so that ย power holder remains ย alive ย to the fact ย that the power ย are not for their ย personal ย aggrandizement, but for the welfare ย and advancement of the society. This will ย preserve peace and ย stability and ย chance development ย in the country.
  2. Education ย will render ย a big ย help here., the mass ย Literacy ย campaign as was begun by the ย federal government ย should pursued ย more ย rigorously. The federal ย government educational institution ย such as ย secondary ย schools, college ย of education , ;polytechnic and ย universities should be used to ย inculcate ย the spirit ย of nationalism in Nigeria youth and ย children.
  3. Economic inequality is known for ย its ย capability of ย breading conflict and a state ย with sound ย economy ย badly ย witness ย political ย and social ย unrest ย Nigeria should ย be ย free to work ย in and ย investment ย whatever ย ย they please in the ย federation ย to ย create ย business ย interest that ย ย transcend ย ethnic ย boundaries . This should be under government ย control ย to avoid ย internal economic ย dominant ย of one group of the ย other which will ย ย being ย conflict.

LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The limiting factor of this research work ย include time and ย finance ย similarly, the ย problem of the research ย structure ย from the paucity ย of data to ย lack of reasonable co-operation from the sample ย population.

In most case the researcher received negative or non-response to relevant research ย question.

ย SUGGESTION FOR FURTHER STUDY

Since ย Nigeria is faced ย with the ย problem ย of ethnicity, the ย research ย is of ย view ย that more ย attention should ย be given to division that ย exist ย in ย pluralist ย society by ย federal government ย to ย enable them love a peaceful and united ย nation.

ย CONCLUSION

Ethnic politics is like every other political phenomenon has much bearings on the society ย within which it operates. Its effects on Nigeria society is adverse thus on the political development of Nigeria. The research therefore sees equitable distribution of resource as the only option its Curb down ethnic politics. Their government ย ย should ensure that public resources are not diverted into individual pockets.

Now having seen the major are in ย which ethnic politics is in ย active ย operate ย especially ย its role ย in the economic ย development ย of Nigeria. It ย clear that it ย work ย negatively it ย militate ย against the ย progress of this ย country ย in ย view of this Nigerians should in ย the interest ย of peace ย and ย stability ย as well as ย for the upliftment of the ย lot of this ย country ย redeclare their individual ย ย loyalties ย ย instead ย for their ethnic ย groups, now ย for Nigeria ย as a nation.
