CHAPTER ONE

Objective of the study

The broad objective of the study is to examine planning and implementation of quality control in a manufacturing company using Nigeria Brewery, Lagos State as case study. Specifically, this study seeks:

  1. To examine the techniques of quality control applicable in manufacturing industry.
  2. To ascertain whether inspection of technique will affect production control.
  3. To ascertain if there is any effect of quality control technique on product quality.

CHAPTER TWO

LITERATURE REVIEW

INTRODUCTION

Our focus in this chapter is to critically examine relevant literatures that would assist in explaining the research problem and furthermore recognize the efforts of scholars who had previously contributed immensely to similar research. The chapter intends to deepen the understanding of the study and close the perceived gaps.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

MANUFACTURING SECTOR

Manufacturing is a production  method or process that creates goods by combining supplies, ingredients or raw materials using a formula or recipe. It is frequently used in industries that produce bulk quantities of goods. The manufacturing sector is part of the goods-producing industries supersector group. The Manufacturing sector comprises establishments engaged in the mechanical, physical, or chemical transformation of materials, substances, or components into new products (Nnadi, Akawnonu, & Okafor, 2018).

Manufacturing industries wish to satisfy customer demands expressed in terms of real or estimate need and expectations. Moreover, due to the current technological developments, manufacturing companies need to perform engineering changes in manufacturing systems to adapt their manufacturing program and enhance the products, while reducing manufacturing costs. These needs various facilities are complex, dynamic, stochastic systems. Starting at the beginning of organized manufacturing, workers, supervisors, engineers, and managers have developed many clever and practical methods for controlling production process and activities(Denkena & Winter, 2015).

Consequently manufacturing industries have recognizing the importance of numerous manufacturing strategy in their businesses performance and efficiency. From those strategies, production planning and controls have an important role in organizations to achieve firm performance and a competitive advantage. Since this strategy provides to meet customer expectation, reduce production difficulties and enhance the birth of manufacturing industries at higher extent. Moreover, in a complex manufacturing environment, a comprehensive production planning and controlling process are adopted in order to ensure the best utilization of resources, improve production capacity and maximize a firm’s profitability. Besides in the attention of metal manufacturing investment in various nations were increased because of the sharp importance of a skilled workforce, technological exchanges, supply-chain logistics, and emphasis on scale economies (Dametew & Ebinger, 2017). Therefore Every manufacturing sector that must attain maximum output with minimum input of resources will result in high marginal profit needs to pay more attention to planning.

Concept of Production and management

Elewa, Afolalu, & Fayomi (2019) defines production as an organized activity transforming raw materials. Raw materials may include anything from rough ore to an electric motor. However, the finished product of one industry may be the raw materials of another. Production therefore includes all manufacturing and extractive industries. The physical features of production vary from industry to industry and are usually specific to each one, or even to particular companies. Production management then becomes the process of effectively planning and supervisory roles responsible for the actual transformation of materials into finished products. Continuous cost reduction, high productivity and product quality have proved essential for all organizations to stay in operation ( Ezz, Steel,  Ezdk, & Dekheila,  2012). That is what production management is all about. Crosby (1992) notes that production management is far wider in its application than assuring product or service quality. It is a way of managing business processes to ensure complete customers satisfaction at every stage, internally and externally.

Kaplan (2014) holds the view that production management provides direction, reduces the overall impact of change, increases productivity and allows managers to organize, lead, control, and direct the activities necessary to accomplish organizational objectives. By implication, production management is what to manage, where to manage, when to manage, and how productive system and operations are carried out. The terms manufacturing management, production management and operations management are sometimes used interchangeably to refer to the functional field of production and operations management.

 

 CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, we described the research procedure for this study. A research methodology is a research process adopted or employed to systematically and scientifically present the results of a study to the research audience viz. a vis, the study beneficiaries.

RESEARCH DESIGN

Research designs are perceived to be an overall strategy adopted by the researcher whereby different components of the study are integrated in a logical manner to effectively address a research problem. In this study, the researcher employed the survey research design. This is due to the nature of the study whereby the opinion and views of people are sampled. According to Singleton & Straits, (2009), Survey research can use quantitative research strategies (e.g., using questionnaires with numerically rated items), qualitative research strategies (e.g., using open-ended questions), or both strategies (i.e., mixed methods). As it is often used to describe and explore human behaviour, surveys are therefore frequently used in social and psychological research.

CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the analysis of data derived through the questionnaire and key informant interview administered on the respondents in the study area. The analysis and interpretation were derived from the findings of the study. The data analysis depicts the simple frequency and percentage of the respondents as well as interpretation of the information gathered. A total of seventy-nine (79) questionnaires were administered to respondents all of of which only seventy (70) were returned and validated. This was due to irregular, incomplete and inappropriate responses to some questionnaire. For this study a total of 70 was validated for the analysis.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

SUMMARY

The broad objective of this study is to examine the impact of production planning and control on manufacturing process using  Nigeria  Brewery in Lagos State as case study,as case study. The study  discuss rd techniques of quality control applicable in manufacturing industry, ascertain whether inspection of technique will affect production control, and and  determine if there is any effect of quality control technique on product quality. The study is however delimited to Nigeria Breweries, Lagos State.

Survey research design was employed for the study and with the aid of convenient sampling technique seventy-nine(79) participant was selected for the study who are staff and management in Nigeria Brewery     Lagos State. Well structured questionnaire was issued to the respondent of  which 70 were retrieved and validated for the study. The data obtained were analyzed using frequency counts and simple percentage. Hypothesis test was conducted using  Chi-Square statistical package for social science (SPSS v.23).

CONCLUSION

Every manufacturing sector that must attain maximum output with minimum input of resources will result in high marginal profit needs to pay more attention to planning and implementation of quality control. While production planning enhanced the coordination of production flow, thereby eliminating any constraint that may cause any disruption in the production line, hence highly demanded in organizational management, Quality control refers to an activity in manufacturing industries which aim to establish quality standards check that they are being adhered to take corrective action where necessary and set improved standard where possible. This is because, once customer requirement are defined, a quick reporting process is needed which should be maintained throughout design specification, manufacture and inspection.

Findings of the study revealed that

  1. Quality control and improvement is one of the most important factors in every organization.
  2. Highly committed to the implementation of quality control usually maintain quality standard in production which in turn provides a direction to the business.
  3. Quality control implementation involves some methodologies which includes: the planning phase, the procedure phase and organizational change phase
  4. Production planning and inspection of production technique has a significant effect on production control.
  5. There is a significant effect of quality control technique on product quality.

RECOMMENDATION

Recommendation on the basis of findings the researcher made the following recommendation with the belief that when studied and applied, would help to increase the standard already at hand

  • Initial production checks should always be carried out as a default in this, would lead to the production of substandard goods.
  • During production inspection should be carried out.
  • Daily production monitoring should be ensured and
  • Pre-production inspection should also be carried out.
  • Management should ensure that adequate care and through supervision takes place especially during manufacturing process.
  • Manufacturing companies should make sure that all unavoidable deviation are corrected so as to meet the objective of production in the organization.
  • There should be a room for periodic, job training for the workers in the production department to avoid the use of outdated method in manufacturing.
  • Proper production planning and control should be performed by considering all components required for effective production in manufacturing industries.
  • Periodical review of production planning and control should be serious considered in order to detect any possible loophole that will increase operational cost as well as low product quality.
