Chapter One

Research Objective of the study

The objectives of the study are;

  1. To find out whether primary school pupils absent themselves from their various schools within Gad local government.
  2. To find out how poor attendance affect pupils performance in primary schools in Gada local government.
  3. To identify the factors affecting pupils attendance to school in Gada local government area.

CHAPTER TWO

REVIEWED OF RELATED LITERATURE

Concept of school attendance

A school is an institution designed for the teaching of students or pupils under the direction of teachers. (oxford dictionary 6th edition) Attendance is the act of being present in a place or a record of how often a person goes to classes, meetings e.t.c.(Merriam Webster, 2008 edition) School attendance is a measure of the number of children who attend school and the amount of time they are present.(Collins dictionary 7th edition) A school is set up for the main purpose of bringing children from different families together under one roof(classroom) in order to check students commitment to receiving instruction from the teachers, and to make them develop social co-existence with each other. School attendance refers to whether a person attend school, fulltime or part time at any accredited institution of programme during all or part of specified period of time (Ogherbvu,1999)

The concept of school attendance refers to the act of regularly attending school or educational institutions as a student. It is a fundamental aspect of the education system that emphasizes the importance of students being physically present in the school environment to receive instruction, engage in learning activities, and interact with teachers and peers.

School attendance is vital for several reasons. Firstly, it ensures that students have access to the educational resources, curriculum, and learning opportunities provided by the school. Attending school regularly allows students to actively participate in classroom discussions, receive instructions from teachers, ask questions, and engage in collaborative activities with their peers. This active involvement enhances their learning experience and academic development.

Secondly, school attendance promotes the social and emotional growth of students. By attending school, students have the opportunity to interact with their peers and develop important social skills such as communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution. Regular attendance also allows students to form friendships, build a sense of community, and develop a sense of belonging within the school environment.

Furthermore, consistent school attendance plays a crucial role in academic achievement. Research consistently shows a positive correlation between attendance rates and academic performance. Students who attend school regularly have better grades, higher test scores, and a higher likelihood of graduating from high school. Regular attendance enables students to stay on track with the curriculum, receive timely feedback from teachers, and participate in classroom activities that enhance their understanding and retention of knowledge.

The concept of school attendance is not only essential for individual students but also for the overall functioning of the education system. Schools rely on consistent attendance to plan and deliver effective instruction, allocate resources, and evaluate their programs’ effectiveness. When students are absent from school frequently, it can disrupt the flow of instruction, hinder their academic progress, and create challenges for teachers in providing individualized support.

 

CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

  INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, we described the research procedure for this study. A research methodology is a research process adopted or employed to systematically and scientifically present the results of a study to the research audience viz. a vis, the study beneficiaries.

  RESEARCH DESIGN

Research designs are perceived to be an overall strategy adopted by the researcher whereby different components of the study are integrated in a logical manner to effectively address a research problem. In this study, the researcher employed the survey research design. This is due to the nature of the study whereby the opinion and views of people are sampled. According to Singleton & Straits, (2009), Survey research can use quantitative research strategies (e.g., using questionnaires with numerically rated items), qualitative research strategies (e.g., using open-ended questions), or both strategies (i.e., mixed methods). As it is often used to describe and explore human behaviour, surveys are therefore frequently used in social and psychological research.

  POPULATION OF THE STUDY

According to Udoyen (2019), a study population is a group of elements or individuals as the case may be, who share similar characteristics. These similar features can include location, gender, age, sex or specific interest. The emphasis on study population is that it constitutes of individuals or elements that are homogeneous in description.

This study was carried to examine Poor Attendance and its Effect on Primary school pupils performance’. Selected primary school in Lagos form the population of the study.

CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the analysis of data derived through the questionnaire and key informant interview administered on the respondents in the study area. The analysis and interpretation were derived from the findings of the study. The data analysis depicts the simple frequency and percentage of the respondents as well as interpretation of the information gathered. A total of eighty (80) questionnaires were administered to respondents of which only seventy-seven (77) were returned and validated. This was due to irregular, incomplete and inappropriate responses to some questionnaire. For this study a total of 77 was validated for the analysis.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Introduction  

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain Poor Attendance and it’s Effect on Primary school pupils performance’.. In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing Poor Attendance and it’s Effect on Primary school pupils performance’.

Summary             

This study was Poor Attendance and it’s Effect on Primary school pupils performance’. Three objectives were raised which included:  To find out whether primary school pupils absent themselves from their various schools within Gad local government, to find out how poor attendance affect pupils performance in primary schools in Gada local government and to identify the factors affecting pupils attendance to school in Gada local government area.. A total of 77 responses were received and validated from the enrolled participants where all respondents were drawn from selected primary schools Gada local government area. Hypothesis was tested using Chi-Square statistical tool (SPSS).

 Conclusion  

It was concluded from this study that poor attendance affects primary school pupil’s performances in Gada local government area, Sokoto state. It was also realized72% of pupils in Gada local government area are attending school, only 28% absents themselves from school and factors affecting pupils attendance to school in Gada local government area includes; School, Students, and Parental factors.

Recommendation

Poor attendance affects pupil’s performance in primary schools in Gada Local government area, therefore, headteachers, teachers, parents, educational administrators, should encourage primary school pupils to come to school in order to enhance their education.

Factors affecting pupils attendance to school in Gada local government area includes; school, student and parental factors. Therefore all these factors have to be tackled in order to improve primary school pupil’s attendance in Gada local government area
