Chapter One

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The objective of this project work is to develop an automated vehicle identification system of official car in Federal Polytechnic Nekede that will achieve the following:

  1. Assist the security men to identify an official car,
  2. Indirectly coerce some person in the management to be computer literate.
  3. Provide them reliable and easy means on official car identification.
  4. Register and management all official car in the school.

CHAPTER TWO

LITERATURE OF REVIEW

BACKGROUND HISTORY OF VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION

In the mid 1950’s American automobile manufacturers began stamping and casting identifying numbers on cars and their parts. The vehicle identification number has become referred to as the VIN. The obvious purpose was to give an accurate description of the vehicle when mass production numbers were starting to climb in very significant numbers. Research has shown that early Vin’s came in all sorts of variations which depended on the individual manufacturer at that time. In the early 1980’s the National highway Traffic Safety Administration United State Department of Transport required that all road vehicles must contain a 17 character VIN. This established the fixed VIN system for major vehicle manufacturers as it is known today. Thus, establishing a unique DNA style number for each unique vehicle which rolled off the assembly line.

 VEHICLE IDENTIFIER SECTION

The 10th to 17th positions are used as the vehicle identifier section or VIS. This is used by the manufacturer to identify the individual vehicle in question. This may include information on options installed or engine and transmission choices, but often is a simple sequential number. In North America, the last five digits must be numeric.

Model Year Encoding

One consistent element of the VIS is the 10th digit, which is required worldwide to encode the model year of the vehicle. Besides the three letters that are not allowed in the VIN itself  – I, O and Q, the letters U and Z and the digit 0 are not used for the model year code. Note that the year code is the model year for the vehicle. The year 1980 was encoded by some manufacturers, especially General Motors and Chrysler, as A – since the 17-digit VIN wasn’t mandatory until 1981, and the A or zero was in the manufacturer’s pre-1981 placement in the VIN, yet Ford and AMC still used a zero for 1980. Subsequent years increment through the allowed letters, so that Y represents the year 2000. 2001 to 2009 are encoded as the digits 1 to 9, and subsequent years are encoded as A, B, C, and so on.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

METHODOLOGY ADOPTED

In developing any project they are methodology that can be considered. These are some methodology that can be used, which are Structured System Analysis and Design Method – SSADM, Prototype and Expert System methodology.

CHAPTER FOUR

SYSTEM DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION

OBJECTIVES OF THE NEW DESIGN

The goal or objective of the new design includes the following below:

  1. Official identifier software is the name of the new system.
  2. The system will provide a databank for storing official car’s information.
  3. Create an interface the user will use in identifying an official car.
  4. The system will also have a module for the admin to key in any official car this acquired in the institution.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

SUMMARY

This project, Automated Vehicle Identification System for Official car in Federal Polytechnic Nekede aim at designing a software that will capture details or information of all official car in the school and retrieve these information for identification needed. The security men at the gate cannot tell which car is an official car and give a complete details on the official in the school, this prompt the development of this automated system to solve the problem associate to the existing system. The software is design using the Structural System Analysis and Design Method, the programming language use in writing this software is visual basic.net and the database in storing information of the official car is MS-SQL database. The implementation of this automated vehicle identification system of official car in the school will assist the security men identify school official car and help the school management to manage these car by knowing the date of purchase and some other relevant information.

  CONCLUSION

This project is aimed at replacing and improving the manual mode of in the security system with a more sophisticated computerized system of storing school official car information.

The program will aids the security men in official car identification. The benefits of this develop software includes:

  1. Speed: the program gives faster access for identification.
  2. Reliability: This is achieved since data entered interactively to the computer are saved in files and duplicated to other external disk at choice; also records can be adjusted by authorized bodies.
  3. The new system can also allow to be printed, such as reports, forms if needed.

  RECOMMENDATIONS

With respect to the data analysis, it was discovered that computer application in identification of official car in the school would improve efficiently. It is therefore recommended that management of higher institution should use this program and carryout the following recommendations:

  1. A routine checkup of the computer system which the application is installed, to avoid break down.
  2. It is advisable for the management to have security men that computer literate for effective use of the software.
  3. The system that the software is installed to must have an antivirus for continuous smooth running.
