Review of related literature

The concept of social media

Social media continuously keeps changing and as such it is difficult to assign a fixed definition to it as Jacka and Scott (2011), argued that ‘there is no single recognized definition for social media’’. However some scholars have defined it in different perspectives over the past years. Kaplan and Haenlein (2010), defined social media as a group of internet- based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0 and allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content. The Oxford dictionary (2011), also defined social media as “websites and applications used for social networking”. Another definition of social media is that it is a ‘’communication channel which is very popular, extremely fast and broad, has proven to be highly effective, as well as trusted by billions of people , to share and discover content concerning individuals, brands, information, entertainment and knowhow’’ (Dearborn, 2014). One theme that all these definitions underpin is that social media involves some form of communication between individuals over the internet. Social media began in the late 1990s with the first recognized social media network called “Six Degrees “ in 1997 and this technology enabled people to upload a profile and make friends. From 1997 to 2001 a number of community tools; Asian Avenue, black planet and MiGente began supporting various combination of profile and publicly articulated friend (Boyd, Danah, Ellison and Nicole, 2007). There has been tremendous improvement since this era and today there exist uncountable social networking sites either developed for local use, specific purpose or international use. Kaplan and Haenlein (2010), classified social media into six (6) different categories as follows;

  1. Collaborative project (wikipedia)
  2. Blogs and micro blogs (twitter)
  3. Content communities (youtube)
  4. Social networking sites (FB, 2go, BB chat)
  5. Virtual game World (world of war craft)
  6. Virtual second world (second life)

Research methodology

Research Design

The research design adopted in this research work is the survey research design which involves the usage of self-designed questionnaire in the collection of data. Under the survey research design, primary data of this study will be collected from selected students in federal Poly Ado in order to determine the impact of social media use of abbreviations on the writing skills. The design was chosen because it enables the researcher to collect data without manipulation of any variables of interest in the study. The design also provides opportunity for equal chance of participation in the study for respondents.

Population of Study

The population of study is the census of all items or a subject that possess the characteristics or that have the knowledge of the phenomenon that is being studied (Asiaka, 1991). It also means the aggregate people from which the sample is to be drawn.

Population is sometimes referred to as the universe. The population of this research study will be Seventy-five (75) selected students of federal Poly Ado

Sample Size and Sampling Techniques

The researcher made use of stratified sampling technique because all the members have the same probability of occurrence. The researcher narrowed down the samples to selected students in federal Poly Ado in order to determine the impact of social media use of abbreviations on the writing skills.

DATA PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter is about the analysis and presentation of data collected from the field through questionnaire. The analysis of the data with particular question immediately followed by the presentation of findings.

As mentioned in chapter three, 63 questionnaires were administered and 50 were retrieved and necessary analysis was carried out on them.

Data Presentation

This is the presentation of the quantitative data collected from the respondents through the questionnaire drawn-tabulation and percent (%) age will be used to analyze the data accordingly.

Conclusion

social networking sites have played a crucial role in founding a bridge among the people, which enable them to communicate on a common platform. Social networking sites can be a great way to stay in touch with a large group of people. The students of tertiary level have embraced this new way of communication to connect with their classmates and to keep in touch with their friends. Communication is rapidly changing, as now the educators and the students communicate through social networking sites. Therefore it is important to emphasis on how the educators can help their students to utilize the benefits of social networking sites to improve their writing skill. Therefore this research study suggests that if the teachers as well as the students utilize the social media in proper way it will be beneficial for them to enhance their witting skill

Recommendation

The students need to be trained on better usage of the social media so as to minimize time wastage on chatting and other irrelevant engagements that are not of major importance on their lives.

Hence, students’ adoption of modern technologies underlines the dire need for shielding formal English against the odd forms of language, which have become commonplace on social media, especially when it comes to instant messaging. Education stakeholders are advised to introduce a sustained education for students on social media use from their early years of learning. They are advised to leverage the power of social media outlets to help strengthen students’ writing abilities and talents.
