CHAPTER ONE

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The Main Objective of the study is to appraise the incessant strike action in the tertiary institutions and impact on academic activities. A case study of Delta state university; The specific objectives include:

  1. To determine the impact of incessant strikes on academic activities.
  2. To understand the causes of incessant strikes in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
  3. To examine the effects of incessant strikes in Nigeria.

CHAPTER TWO 

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Concept of strike

The concept of strike action is also known as labor strike or strike. Strike is a common phenomenon that cuts across all tiers of the globe (Adavbiele, 2015). According to Hornby (2001), strike is a period of time when an organized group of employees of a company stops. working because of a disagreement over pay or conditions. It can be seen as an action or attitude exhibited by a group of people (that is, employees or students) to express their level of disagreement with a view to attracting favorable responses from those concerned. Strike actions over time have been used as a tool by union leaders in registering their grievances concerning pay and conditions. The intensity of strike actions often varies from one sector to another; and from one country to another. Strike actions have been a recurring phenomenon in Nigerian‟s education sector and as such, strike actions have led to several grievous consequences in the program offerings in the nation (Adavbiele, 2015). In an ordinary sense, strike is a deliberate stoppage of work by workers in order to put pressure on their employer to accede to their demands (Ahmed, 2014). Strike is defined by the Business Dictionary as collective, organized, cessation or slowdown of work by employees, to force acceptance of their demands by the employer. In Wikipedia, strike is defined as a work stoppage caused by the mass refusal of employees to work, which usually takes place in response to employee grievances (Wikipedia, 2021). According to the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, strike is defined as organized stopping of work by employees because of a disagreement. Strike has been defined as the cessation of work by a body of persons employed acting in combination, or a concerted refusal or a refusal under a common understanding of any number of persons employed to continue to work for an employer in consequence of a dispute, done as a means of compelling their employer or any persons or body of persons employed, to accept or not to accept terms of employment and physical conditions of work (Ahmed, 2014). Ivancevich (2007) expressed that strike is an effort by employee to withhold work so that the employer will make greater concessions at the bargaining table. International Labor Organization (2011) states that strike is the most visible and controversial form of collective action in the event of a labor dispute and is often seen as the last resort of workers‟ organizations in pursuit of their demands. In business terms, a strike can be understood as a curtailment of work, due to the collective refusal of workers to work, which occurs as a response to employee grievances.

 

CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, we described the research procedure for this study. A research methodology is a research process adopted or employed to systematically and scientifically present the results of a study to the research audience viz. a vis, the study beneficiaries.

RESEARCH DESIGN

Research designs are perceived to be an overall strategy adopted by the researcher whereby different components of the study are integrated in a logical manner to effectively address a research problem. In this study, the researcher employed the survey research design. This is due to the nature of the study whereby the opinion and views of people are sampled. According to Singleton & Straits, (2009), Survey research can use quantitative research strategies (e.g., using questionnaires with numerically rated items), qualitative research strategies (e.g., using open-ended questions), or both strategies (i.e., mixed methods). As it is often used to describe and explore human behaviour, surveys are therefore frequently used in social and psychological research.

POPULATION OF THE STUDY

According to Udoyen (2019), a study population is a group of elements or individuals as the case may be, who share similar characteristics. These similar features can include location, gender, age, sex or specific interest. The emphasis on study population is that it constitutes of individuals or elements that are homogeneous in description.

This study was carried to examine Incessant Strike Action in the Tertiary Institutions and Impact on Academic Activities. Delta State University form the population of the study.

CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the analysis of data derived through the questionnaire and key informant interview administered on the respondents in the study area. The analysis and interpretation were derived from the findings of the study. The data analysis depicts the simple frequency and percentage of the respondents as well as interpretation of the information gathered. A total of eighty (80) questionnaires were administered to respondents of which only seventy-seven (77) were returned and validated. This was due to irregular, incomplete and inappropriate responses to some questionnaire. For this study a total of 77 was validated for the analysis.

TEST OF HYPOTHESIS

Ho1: There is no significant impact of incessant strikes on academic activities.

Ho1: there are no causes of incessant strikes in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Introduction     

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain Incessant Strike Action in the Tertiary Institutions and Impact on Academic Activities. A Case Study of Delta State University. In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing the challenges of Incessant Strike Action in the Tertiary Institutions and Impact on Academic Activities.

Summary        

This study was on Incessant Strike Action in the Tertiary Institutions and Impact on Academic Activities. A Case Study of Delta State University.  Three objectives were raised which included:   To determine the impact of incessant strikes on academic activities, to understand the causes of incessant strikes in Nigerian tertiary institutions and to examine the effects of incessant strikes in Nigeria. A total of 77 responses were received and validated from the enrolled participants where all respondents were drawn from selected hospitality industries in Lagos.  Hypothesis was tested using Chi-Square statistical tool (SPSS).

Conclusion

It was observed that, the strike has greater implication on the academic of the students in particular and the educational sector of the youth in general. The distortion of school calendar is greatly felt non coverage of the course content and inability of the students to compete with their counterpart in the other universities. it was also noted that the state of insecurity on our various campuses needs urgent attention thus strike and closure should not be encouraged

Recommendation

The government should look strictly to eradicate measures by adopting to recommendation made during resolution between the government and various unions. Permanent implementation of policy statement should be adopted by government and various institutions as to achieve the set goals and objectives. Government should provide adequate infrastructure and adequate man power needed for the smooth running of various institutions. There must be provision of adequate security in our campuses to ensure softy of lifes and man’s dignity.
