The Classification and Knowledge Development by Technical Librarians in Academic Libraries in Anambra State
Chapter One
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
In line with the statement of the problems of this study which are not limited to the excruciating lack of effective support towards equipping academic libraries non-challant attitude of masses towards gaining new knowledge from academic libraries lack of proper library classification which makes information difficult for the researches, this work aims to the following;
- To find out factors affecting classification and knowledge development by technical librarians in Academic Libraries in the state.
- To recommend the most possible solutions to those identified factors (affecting) militating against effective classification and knowledge development in Academic Libraries in this state.
- To determine the strategy through which government of Anambra State will ensure proper and adequate library building in all the Academic settings.
- To examine the level of information accessibility and enhance effective information dissemination for depositions in the Academic Libraries in Anambra State.
CHAPTER TWO
REVIEW TO RELATED LITERATURE
INTRODUCTION
Literature review serves as a theoretical frame work or base for understanding the concept and the subject matter of any research work of this nature. However, Nigeria has been described as a failed state by many academicians due to other educational backwardness and other academic pundits on the ground that as a state it has failed to mitigate the excruciating educational sector in shamble including lack of effective academic libraries, lack of motivation for readers (scholars). To research, lack of knowledge acquisition, lack of professional libraries as staffs of the academic library which has been recycling ignorants and leaving the library with arm chair librarians who are not vibrant to attained to the library users which has result in celebrating mediocrities, illiteracy culminating to poverty, brain drain in Anambra State precisely.
The light of the above, the researcher choose to discourse the classification and knowledge development by technical librarians in academic libraries in Anambra State with the following subheading:-
- The concept/meaning of classification and knowledge development by technical librarians in academic libraries.
- Knowledge management in libraries
- Importance of library classification
- Types of library classification
- Library and information education and training
- The technical section of the library
- The economic value of information and knowledge.
- Other initiative that facilitate access to knowledge and information in African.
- The role of academic libraries
- The role of innovative libraries and information services in the industrial development.
THE CONCEPT/MEANING OF CLASSIFICATION AND KNOWLEDGE DEVELOPMENT IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES
While the business world is changing in the new knowledge economy and digital age, libraries of all types are undergoing drastic changes also the new role of the libraries in 21st century need to be as a learning and knowledge centre for their users as well as do intellectual commons for their respective communities where to borrow the phase from the KEYSTONE.
PRINCIPLE “People and ideas interact in both the real and virtual environment to expand learning and facilitate the creation of new knowledge.
As a learning organization, libraries should provide strong leadership in knowledge management unlike those business organization and information centres whose goals for kno3wledge management is for competitive advantage most pubic academic and research libraries, with the exception of company libraries which may be known or called corporate libraries.
The literature shows that most libraries in Africa are still in the first phase of implementing innovative library services which focuses on the provision of information about the library some classification system are more suitable for aiding subject access rather than shelf location.
For example; Universal Decimal Classification which uses a complicated notation of pluses and colon, is more difficult to use for the purpose of shelf arrangement but is more expressive compared to DDC in terms of showing relationship between subjects. Similarly faceted classification schemes are more difficult to use for shelf arrangement unless the user has knowledge of the citation order.
CHAPTER THREE
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the method which the researcher need in carrying out the study which includes:- the design of the study, area of the study, population of the study, sample size/sampling techniques, instrument used for data collection, reliabilities and retrieval of instrument and the method of data analysis.
DESIGN OF THE STUDY
In the study, survey design was considered most appropriate which is mainly designed to investigate classification and knowledge development by technical librarians in academic libraries in Anambra State and to proper solution to the excruciating ineffective classification and knowledge development technical librarians in academic libraries in the state this was done using questionnaire and interview method.
AREA OF THE STUDY
The area of this study covers the whole senatorial zones in Anambra State comprising twenty one local governments and this academic institutions and their libraries.
However, Anambra State is located in South East part of Nigeria.
POPULATION OF THE STUDY
The population of this study is centered on Anambrarians ranging from students workers and politicians, youths.
Hence, the population was estimated to 400,000 Anambrarians.
CHAPTER FOUR
DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS
This chapter data collected were presented and analyzed using the items in he questionnaire.
PRESENTATION OF FINDINGS
Question 1:
Does lack of library effective equipment (materials) affect classification and knowledge development in Academic libraries?
CHAPTER FIVE
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS
From the data presented in the preceding chapters, we found out that this study sought to find out the factors responsible for effective classification and knowledge development by technical libraries in academic libraries, bad attitudes of the technical librarians, ineffective library facilities coupled with users lack of interest in library information which has drastically culminated to the excruciating lack of effective classification and knowledge development in academic libraries in Anambra State.
The findings also revealed that libraries are not adequately facilitated both government and private individuals have not been meeting with the expectations towards achieving effective classification and knowledge development in academic library in Anambra State. It was also found out that there has been no standard academic library in Anambra State for more than twelve (12) years now. It was also discovered that lack of technical training of technical librarians is a problem to effective classification and knowledge development in academic libraries.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, one can see that libraries have a critical role to play to facilitate access to knowledge and information which can foster innovation as a critical ingredient for sustainable development and economic growth in African.
However, the case of Anambra State is different mean while there have not been knowledge development in academic libraries due to the non-challant attitudes of the government of Anambra State and the private individuals in building up standard academic libraries in this institutions which had been culminating (heralding) to lack of knowledge development in this state.
Notwithstanding, in this section of this work, the researcher applauded the most outstanding ICON of patriotism in South-east Nigeria, Mr. Emeka Ofor for his immense effort towards equipping our academic libraries in Anambra State and in South east states at large.
Although that is never enough for meeting up the academic knowledge development for the scholars and researchers.
RECOMMENDATIONS
In view of this finding from this field research work, the following recommendations were made by the researcher.
- That the government of Anambra State should help in building up effective academic libraries for empowering knowledge development among the youths, scholars, students, and researchers in the state.
- The researcher also recommended that if academic libraries are adequate funded and equipped it will help in enhancing/boosting the morale of the researchers and scholars in effectively gaining knowledge development from the library information.
- She also recommended that private individuals should help in building and facilitating academic libraries.
- That effective technical/technological training should be given to the technical libraries so as to meet up with emerging changes in ICTs in Nigeria.
- She equally recommended that academic libraries in Anambra State needed reconstruction and rehabilitations.
AREA FOR FURTHER STUDIES
In the view of this quantitative research work, the researcher revealed some critical (vital) areas for further research (studied) as follows: –
- ICTs knowledge development in academic library.
- Technical and computer training of the technical librarians.
- Cooperative academic library.
Sequel to the above vital areas pointed out by the researcher, should be looked into for further research work in information science department.
