REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Concept of Education

Education has variously been described as an essential instrument for societal development. It is therefore an important institution including the totality of structures and roles, processes relation and material instructions put in place around society’s interest in the acculturation or socialization of the young ones. According to Asuru (2009) education is a potent force which could be utilized for the solution of problems and for the fullest realization of the potentials and aspiration of a nation, hence it could effectively be used not only for social, economic and political reconstruction, but also meet the critical needs of the society. In all the definitions, education is an investment in human beings, which yields returns and contributes to the wealth and development of the society by increasing its productive and consumptive capacity. UNESCO (2000) reported that teachers undoubtedly remain the managers of knowledge particularly in the developing nations. As a support for this, education is being acknowledged globally as an instrument per excellence for national development. The needs and challenges of any society are best accomplished through education whose bedrock are teachers. No doubt, the Nigerian Constitution understanding the vital role education plays in the society accord equal rights for all citizens to acquire education. In view of this, the government had initiated one reforms or the other to make the nation an educated one, and series of curriculum changes. In his contributions, Fafunwa (1974) postulated that education means a formal training that is given in schools and institutions. He stated further that it means the acquisition of the ability to read, write and calculates. This was also related to the specialized training that is given on the job. Ukeje (1979) cited in Isah (2009) noted that there are three (3) major ways of using concept of education namely; as a process, discipline and a product. As a process, it is the means by which men acquire their civilization of the past and are enabled both to take part in the civilization of the present, and make the civilization of the future. From this, education is thus a process of transmitting, preserving, developing and advancing the culture of a people. As a product, education means change in behaviour. The essence of being educated means a transformation of behaviour. Brameld as cited in Ukeje (1979), insists that education is power. It is a very powerful tool that can be used by man for his or her own distinction or the transformation and reconstruction of his or her environment. It could also be a discipline, that is, a body of organized knowledge that deals with what should be taught, why it should be taught, how it should be taught and to whom should it be taught. In a similar opinion shared by Ogbalu (1978) in Uche (1984) that education is the means by which children and young adults develop their emotional intellectuals, spiritual and physical powers which enable them to achieve their cultural revival.
