Managerial Styles of Public Secondary Schools and Private Secondary Schools
CHAPTER ONE
Objective of the study
The objectives of the study are to;
- Find out the decision making pattern of management in public and private secondary schools.
- Identify the human relation pattern of management in public and private secondary schools
- Find out the communication pattern of management in public and private secondary schools.
CHAPTER TWO
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Introduction
According to Bateman and Snell (2007) management is the process of working with people and resources to accomplish organizational goals. Good managers are said to achieve these things effectively and efficiently. Effectively is the ability to achieve organizational goals, whereas efficiency is the achievement of organizational goals with minimal waste of resources. Kreitner and Kinicki (2004) defined management as the process of working with and through others to achieve organizational objectives in an efficient and effective manner. In this case, from the two definitions on management, it is clear that management encompasses more than just wielding power and exercising authority, and is exhibited on different levels. Cortada (2001) argues that, in the business world today, the great executives not only adapt to changing conditions but also apply-fanatically, rigorously, consistently and with discipline, the fundamental management principles. These fundamentals include the four traditional functions of management, and they are:-planning, organizing, leading and controlling. Yammarino, Dansereau and Kennedy (2001) viewed management from three levels, that is, at individual level, at group level and at organizational level. At Individual level, managers mentor, coach, inspire and motivate, whereas at group level, they build teams, generate cohesion and resolve conflicts. Lastly, at organization level on the other hand, managers build culture and generate change. Management, especially by the principals, is a key contributor to the overall academic achievement of students in National Examinations at Secondary School level in Kenya. The management style employed by principals goes a long way in determining the level and quality of education that is offered in their respective schools, and most importantly, the caliber of students that the school produces after four years in secondary school. It is therefore of utmost importance that the principal applies the best management styles in the market to ensure that the goals of success are met. According to Nsubuga (2009), management plays a very crucial role in galvanizing all the other factors in the school together. Furthermore, despite the fact that the management is very important in the achievement of goals of Secondary schools, its’ contribution to improved school performance will not be maximized unless leadership and management are distributed and shared significantly with others.
CHAPTER THREE
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research design
The researcher used descriptive research survey design in building up this project work the choice of this research design was considered appropriate because of its advantages of identifying attributes of a large population from a group of individuals. The design was suitable for the study as the study sought to Managerial styles of Public secondary schools and private secondary schools
Sources of data collection
Data were collected from two main sources namely:
(i)Primary source and
(ii)Secondary source
Primary source:
These are materials of statistical investigation which were collected by the research for a particular purpose. They can be obtained through a survey, observation questionnaire or as experiment; the researcher has adopted the questionnaire method for this study.
Secondary source:
These are data from textbook Journal handset etc. they arise as byproducts of the same other purposes. Example administration, various other unpublished works and write ups were also used.
CHAPTER FOUR
PRESENTATION ANALYSIS INTERPRETATION OF DATA
Introduction
Efforts will be made at this stage to present, analyze and interpret the data collected during the field survey. This presentation will be based on the responses from the completed questionnaires. The result of this exercise will be summarized in tabular forms for easy references and analysis. It will also show answers to questions relating to the research questions for this research study. The researcher employed simple percentage in the analysis.
DATA ANALYSIS
The data collected from the respondents were analyzed in tabular form with simple percentage for easy understanding.
A total of 133(one hundred and thirty three) questionnaires were distributed and 133 questionnaires were returned.
CHAPTER FIVE
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
Introduction
It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain Managerial styles of Public secondary schools and private secondary schools. In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing the challenges of Managerial styles of Public secondary schools and private secondary schools
Summary
This study was on Managerial styles of Public secondary schools and private secondary schools. Three objectives were raised which included: Find out the decision making pattern of management in public and private secondary schools, identify the human relation pattern of management in public and private secondary schools and find out the communication pattern of management in public and private secondary schools. In line with these objectives, two research hypotheses were formulated and two null hypotheses were posited. The total population for the study is 200 staffs of selected secondary schools in Uyo. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. A total of 133 respondents made principals, vice principals adm, teachers and junior staff were used for the study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies
Conclusion
In conclusion, there were multiple factors influencing the leadership role and behaviors of the school principal that have generated implications and recommendations. Principals reported spending significant time on managerial leadership behaviors, a shift from past findings on the behaviors of principals. The resulting recommendation suggested alternative staff support might be needed to prioritize instructional leadership in the face of managerial demands. The difference in the public and private groups related to school size led to the recommendation that schools should work toward reducing their populations through alternative strategies. Third, differences in the work environment were reported in the contextual criteria of the school community leading to the suggestion for enhancement of the strength of community interest and support for the school. Last, Blank (1987) and Smith, Maehr, and Midgley (1992) recommended further work be done to better understand the influence of external social and political goals, standards, and accountability on the middle management role of the school principal.
Recommendation
- It is recommended that a replication of this study be done in another state in the United States to validate the research findings discussed in this study. 2. It is recommended that a replication of this study be done nationally in the United States to validate the research findings discussed in this study.
- It is recommended that further research be done to explore the effects of increased monitoring of student progress on achievement gains.
- It is recommended that further research be done to explore the effects of increased supervision of teaching on achievement gains.
- It is recommended that further research be done to explore the effects of increased management of curriculum on achievement gains.
- It is recommended that further research be done to explore the effects of student population or school size on student achievement gains.
